Okay, I know this essentially equals to spreading fake news, but I find this very interesting:

They'll open Floatplane to others gradually as they expand the infrastructure and the new subscriptions pay the bills...

 

You can't get someone like pewdiepie use Floatplane and bring let's say 10k new subscribers for  $30k a month income to LTT , with maybe $5-10k profit for LTT after paying pewdiepie the rest.... because it could cost floatplane over $10-20k in server rental costs and bandwidth costs.

 

They have bitwit kyle and now there's another new known guy on floatplane , but these are both relatively "small" youtubers  (kyle only passed 1m subscribers) so it's less of a risk for Floatplane.

I don't think 10k subscribers would really stretch the infrastructure so much, judging by the number of views on floatplane I'd say there might as well be more than 10k people subscribed to LTT Floatplane already. 100k would be a lot more difficult, sure, but I don't think the costs would scale quite so high quite so quickly.

 

Then again I don't really know how that stuff works so... yeah.

 

I just think that it would be really great to get someone like him in order to popularize the platform and subscription model in general.

YouTube is doing it like Twitch does it. Per channel and they still take a cut.

Yeah but YouTube only allows certain creators to be sponsored. They must have specific guidelines. Tech Deals is sponsor-able on youtube, while iJustine, PewDiePie, Lost Pause, BitWit etc are not sponsor-able.

Looks like Mr. Deals is family friendly enough that the algorithm approves of him.

It's not just the algorithm, they have to enable it themselves. Jayztwocents recently said that he has this option available, but he hasn't turned it on because he hasn't figured out what to offer in return.

Hence, channels that currently don't offer that possibility may actually be deciding not to, rather than youtube preventing them from doing so.

That depends on their current infrastructure. Maybe they have the infrastructure for 100K+ users due to costs/hassle of upgrading in the future?

 

Also while he has a high viewership/subscription base (he seems to have stopped gaming on youtube), he's litteral cancer. His voice makes me cringe every second he speaks. I rather see someone like Mr Beast on the platform over some manchild

Sure. I don't think this is the case, but I really don't know how these things get done. Maybe they have some fixed amount of bandwith available all the time and then a reserve it can be scaled up to, that they only pay some minimal fee for if it doesn't get used? That would seem to make more sense than constantly having to pay for bandwidth FP isn't using, but question is if it's an option from the providers?

Maybe, but if you think about it, this option is precisely a way to monetize your videos regardless of how advertiser-unfriendly you are, since it comes directly from the viewers.

If the creators who are not deemed "family friendly enough" even get that option.

Yes, but don't think of it on only me. I'm not the only person who hates him, once the yearly subs come I'll gladly pay for it. However someone who hates him as much as me might not choose to support the platform regardless if even 90% goes to the creator.

 

Having someone like pew or paul logan could destroy a new brand, imagine if pauls video got onto FP and they where slower than YT on a takedown. As youtube found out there is such a thing as bad press. IMO no one who has the possibility that could use hate or lead others in a bad way should be permitted on FP. Yes pew fits that criteria (look up Bear Simulator and see what his mindless zombies did), someone like that should never be permitted on FP.

I think the bigger problem is that PewDiePie himself is, quite literally, a major catalyst of the 2017 YouTube 'Adpocalypse' which is one of the major reasons that YouTubers are being left to scramble for additional revenue streams in the first place.  So inviting him onto one of those alternative revenue streams would seem to be a risky and self-destructive course of action.

 

It's kinda like if some ass hole ruined your party and you're all 'We're gonna do a whole new AWESOMER party!' and then you invite the same ass hole to set the dog on fire at that last party.

@LinusTech and Luke actually addressed this on one WAN show at the time, saying (paraphrased) "Yeah, we'd let him on the platform, and then we'd watch everyone unsubscribe from him".

I think ads on videos of ISIS cutting heads played a slightly bigger part in that whole situation, but mentioning both even together is still oversimplifying the whole thing.

 

EDIT: AFAIK YouTube ad money was never a single sustainable source of revenue for a lot of creators to begin with, but then again I don't know much.

It doesn't matter what the 'bigger' problem is, PewDiePie is a big problem regardless of what bigger problems there are.  PewDiePie has literally caused enough problems that he's probably cost other YouTubers, when combined, more revenues than he ever lost himself.  He is so big that the problems he cause have dramatic effects on those other than himself.  He has also proven that his tendency to fall into controversy is not a 'single mistake' but something he has done repeatedly.  In short, PewDiePie is not just dangerous but unpredictably dangerous to commercial operations.

Floatplane doens't have to appease sponsors, and since you pay a la carte, I'd consider the content sufficiently separated. PewDiePie would still be known for youtube, as that's where 99% of his views would be.

That said if he was within the first few people to sign up for floatplane, that could cause an image problem for lmg. New publications do like to attack him and could put lmg on blast for 'supporting hate speech' or whatever. But once that passes he will still be looked at as a youtuber, not a floatpalner lol. Most people probably wont even know what FP is or that he's on it.

I think it’s interesting that maybe Felix would like Floatplane, because the concept is almost completely identical to what he describes. Even the price is only one cent off!
