Because before they could become sponsorable they already got sponsors. To the best of my knowledge in order to become sponsored you can't be sponsored by a 3rd party, or at least thats how I think it would work logically, else people like Linus could go out and abuse the system and make dump truck loads a month.

Once upon a time, it was... Google has tightened their payout requirements to the point even if you used something via fair use you could get your whole channel demonetized, this includes possibly any funds in the account (like PayPal)

Linus even stated at some point (I think how they make money video) that money has dropped a fair amount from youtube.

Only to a point, like I said above if LMG had the paul logan japan video on their server and were slower than youtube at taking it down. Imagine the criticism they would get, people don't care if only 5 or 10 people work there, they care about how fast they can shoot you down. People like Pewdiepie are a liability, easy money but are still a risky investment.

 

If they want to get a mainstream gaming channel I would suggest someone with some common sense, like outsidexbox or Nerd3

Both of those channels produce decent content, one is already on Patreon pulling in over 80K a year (on that alone), I rather see people like that over someone with the username of a stinky person.

You're thinking too small, it's not just ad revenue and despite the lack of adds, FloatPlane still hosts and can host plenty of sponsored content.

 

Let's go for a hypothetical, PewDiePie does something anti-semitic, something he HAS done before so that is not without precedent.  This ends in your usual uproar, the kind of uproar that had the Walt Disney Company drop PewDiePie like he was a bag of rabbid racoons.  Intel could come in and explain that they have this problem, being a company that operates facilities out of Israel and receives tax benefits from that country, they are facing certain pressures about this this matter.  For the foreseeable future, Intel will be unable to offer sponsorship of any operations associated with Floatplane.

Floatplane is independent and not reliant on directly dependent on being an ad supported platform, but it's content very much includes sponsorship and companies/individuals who are producing content for Floatplane.  This reach can still extend fairly far, even as far as events like LTX which involve corporate sponsorship.

 

It is foolish to think that PewDiePie can be 'controlled' or 'insulated from causing harm'.  He is not an adult, he is a 28 year old child and carries about accordingly.  He doesn't need to be personally responsible because he already has a dumb truck of money and an army of sociopathic 16yo boys who think he can do wrong.  This means that he can wreck things up as much as he wants and the meaningful consequences to him are minimal while others pay the price instead.  The only way to protect yourself from PewDiePie causing problems is to not let him in the door in the first place.

They are really setting themselves up for failure and all the videos on trending are paid and promoted. It's all really fake and the genuine ones are hidden and don't get revenue or subscribers.

Oh no. Instead of him making too much money, his income dropped to a significant amount of money....

 

He's estimated to earn 11 million a year (rounding down) even if he was to make a fifth of that, that's still around 2million. I couldn't care less about his whining that he's not getting enough when he makes as much as he does

For one he nearly destroyed every kickstarters game of Bear Simulator (me being one) by being a idiot at gaming for bear simulator (sure the dev shouldn't have taken it personally, but he shouldn't have been the way he was), plus his idiotic minions spammed the steam review/discussion pages 10x harder than the NMS fiasco, so much so you won't find those negative reviews (steam cleaned it up) and forums are posting for owners of the game only.

 

Anyone who can't care about others is someone I really don't want to see on FP, and I hope LMG never permits such scum on it either. (note: I didn't care for him before the game either)

Floatplane is independent and not reliant on directly dependent on being an ad supported platform, but it's content very much includes sponsorship and companies/individuals who are producing content for Floatplane.  This reach can still extend fairly far, even as far as events like LTX which involve corporate sponsorship.

 

It is foolish to think that PewDiePie can be 'controlled' or 'insulated from causing harm'.  He is not an adult, he is a 28 year old child and carries about accordingly.  He doesn't need to be personally responsible because he already has a dumb truck of money and an army of sociopathic 16yo boys who think he can do wrong.  This means that he can wreck things up as much as he wants and the meaningful consequences to him are minimal while others pay the price instead.  The only way to protect yourself from PewDiePie causing problems is to not let him in the door in the first place.

The hypothetical scenario where PewDiePie, literally the most popular YouTube channel on the planet, would join Floatplane, Is also the scenario where Floatplane BECOMES a big, fat thing in the eyes of advertisers and sponsors.

 

PewDiePie may be DANGEROUS to commercial operations but he's also popular.  He'd blow up FloatPlane's membership by joining. Would he bring 62 million subscribers?  No.  But he'd bring a hell of a lot and with that FloatPlane becomes a much bigger target for problems.

I have never listened to a full episode of his and when I first got a taste of it I cringed and closed the video down.  Sad that people gave so much money to this obvious fake and racist.  Also hey sometimes people are rich on paper and nothing more and so maybe he is looking for other ways to make money cuz his empire is falling apart.  Honestly I hope so.

You can check this quite easily, big channels made videos calling out youtube about the children porn long before media started bashing pewdiepie.

Concerning Floatplane, why not? A huge chunck of his fanbase would pay those 2.99$. He said in that video that they sold 20K of those sweaters, and that the pewnews mug was sold out too, meaning there's easily MORE than 20K people willing to pay 2.99/month for his content.

 

If I was LMG, I would contact him some day, offering to join, once the platform is out of alpha and has a few more random creators. He'll easily be n.1 on Floatplane by subscriber count.

I don't blame the people who upload for the adpocalypse I blame youtube. Blaming it on those who upload is stupid, Google has the obligation to ensure the content with advertising meets the standards of their clients, they failed to do that if those clients had a buy your new crib here during a child porno...

 

Pewdiepie didn't cause the issues, google did, and should have demonetized him a long time ago. But they won't he's a cash cow. So no I hate him because of him, I don't want him on FP because of him.

FP is small, it could take years before they have the infrastructure for someone like him, this includes money in the bank for fast upgrades. If even 10% of the those who subscribed to him go over to FP it could destroy FP. Only people who know the server limits are Linus and the FP Crew, if they where to add him he could cause massive server issues. We don't know, no one can guess how many will port over and you can't assume only 1-5% of the daily viewers would port over, but even then at a 3M view could is still 30-150K daily additional users, possibly more due to replays on past viewed videos. So unless they can handle upwards to 500K views a day for the price of 30,000 people I strongly suggest no.

 

It's not all about the cash, let assume linus only gets 30% of the funds, lets say CCs charges 1.5%+0.10 per transaction that means for a 30,000 viewer count at 30% take they get $23,500 USD per month less fees from the payment provider. Sounds like a lot, but there's tax on that too, after costs of servers and employees. Having him on FP could produce a massive boost in finances but equally his followers are not the smartest necessarily, so by having them here in the current state could end up being a financial disaster, and that's not including the risk of bad press if he does something stupid.

subscriber count means shit today. You don't get money by subs, you get by view time and views. He isn't the most popular channel, and isn't the most watched. The 62 million is just a tag he has.

 

He is just "the most subscribed channel on youtube", that's where it stops. Biggest... by subscribers? sure. By views? No. By uploads? Monthly views? Neither. Revenue? Pfff surely not.

I can see how viewership (per upload, pero month, total, etc) could paint a different picture than subscriptions. But that would require numbers on viewrship that bring the point home, the same way @AshleyAshes provided numbers for subscriptions.

I mean by all means do whatever you want LTT staff, but i would lose interest in ever signing up if it just had anybody on it.

 

At the same time... if you really just get EVERY BODY on it, it will probably interest a lot more.

I just think that it would be really great to get someone like him in order to popularize the platform and subscription model in general.

There used to be a way to search on the forums (search by user, select user group as floatplane. Can't do it anymore though, for obvious reasons) and it'd show you every member with a floatplane sub.

 

Literally 3-4 weeks after the first "unofficial" launch of floatplane, where the videos were still posted as forum theres, there was something like 7K subscribers to it, so I can see there easily being 10K now honestly.
