This was bound to happen - A mining rig that doubles as a space heater

Tim Q

From the same company that brought you the server that doubles as a hot water system, now we have this gem of a machine:

The new QC-1 allows consumers to mine cryptocurrencies and utilize the generated heat for heating their homes. It features a high-end passive cooling solution and noiseless design as the unit doesn't require the use of fans or mechanical hard drives. A pair of Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 580 graphics cards are responsible for the cryptomining duties. Together, they can generate a hash rate around 60MH/s. In normal mode, the QC-1 produces 450W of heat. However, customers can activate the booster mode via the provided mobile app for another 200W which brings the total to 650W.

According to the manufacturer, the QC-1 is capable of heating a 20 square-meter room. Qarnot is marketing their crypto heater as a plug-n-play device which customers can setup in 10 minutes. Installation consists of plugging the unit into the wall outlet and router and entering the crypto-wallet address into the mobile app. The QC-1 is designed to mine Bitcoin, Litecoin, and Ethereum. The Qarnot QC-1 comes with a 1 year warranty. The unit currently costs 2900 euros which by today's exchange rate is $3575 plus another $300 shipping fee. If you order a QC-1 before March 20th, Qarnot will deliver the QC-1 to your doorstep before June 20th.

Mining rigs are space heaters on their own, I fail to see the point of this product.

With all the jokes made in this thread, I'm surprised you even posted it haha.

In all seriousness, this is an interesting product.

But wouldn't this make mining that much more accessible, therefore decreasing profit since everyone would be mining?

The chassis is designed such that in can be mounted instead of regular heaters so you can save space.

So they just mount an LD PC-V8 to wall??

Not pics of my actual rig, mine's not photo worthy right now lol.

At least with the above it blows the heat better in to the room, and I put mine on wheels so I can move the damn thing (omfg heavy).

so if the calculator i just found on was accurate. using the figures of

Quote

60MH/s

and

Quote

The unit currently costs 2900 euros which by today's exchange rate is $3575 plus another $300 shipping fee

and if these were to remain constant and only mined ethereum it would take almost 7 years to pay off......

that bundled with a 1 year warranty and hardware that will very very unlikely last that long under mining conditions, this is a terrible investment

I got the same result with a Xeon X5450 @ 4.4GHz, a GTX 970 at 1350MHz and a GTX 650ti at 1033MHz.....in a larger room. And I could direct the airflow for optimum heating efficiency.

Or 1 month or 60 years, who the hell knows. Ethereum could tank or skyrocket. Just treat it like a $3575 heater, if that seems too pricey for a heater then don't buy it. Also as a heater it's very low output so likely wouldn't do much on it's own.

which gets me thinking..who is this for? anyone interested in mining is going to have their own rig, and anyone who isn't really that big into it, isn't going to buy a $3500 heater. they created a product for a market that doesn't exist....also where the hell are they getting  RX580s to put in heaters? nothing about this thing makes sense....looks neat though

How are they pushing 650w on two 580s!? Even if you iverclock the snot out of them I don’t hunk you’d reach that. Maybe the PSU is super inefficient...

That said, that’s still very little heating power and it’d take forever to heat a room.

That's an F in the profile pic

Just as reference of the other fanless cooling solution for PC that exists right now:

That costs about the same in a way, so it's a bit expensive but not that far off.

A friend of mine was wondering yesterday why there was this push to make every appliance connected to the internet.
He joked "Whats next an internet connected space heater?".
I'm totally gonna send this to him xD

Well also, a heater that you can't control based on room temperature is just dumb. And even if it did, it would mean it would slow down on the mining when the room temperature is appropriate which is even dumber
