So an i3 550 or i3 540 would be a poor choice for a minecraft server? And a Xeon X3470 would be a poor choice as well because power hungry. But something like an i5 4590 might be OK as long as there's only a few people using it and it's got plenty of memory like 8GB?

Minecraft depends on better single-core performance (so newer is better) and raw gigahertz (so faster is better), so a 4590 would be pretty good.

With my Phenom II X4 955 at 4.4 GHz 2 cores disabled (though it might be unstable now) and 12GB of RAM it can run 5 people just fine.

Yeah that's not so bad.

I do not have these items anymore, but former pcs include:

My first PC was the HEWLETT PACKARD HP VECTRA VE VEI7

Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 was my first laptop.

Dell Dimension 4400 was my college PC.... which I ended up using it for over 12 years!

I also have a Acer AspireOne Netbook from 2010 which I have no idea what I'd do with it because its so slow now

Pretty much yeah.

Eh, it likes multiple cores to a point. Modpack servers obviously like them a bit more, but usually a decently clocked Haswell or newer quad-core is the happy medium. Paper helps a lot though.

Plus school.

Eh up to you haha but I've got a dual xeon machine with 28gb ram sitting with nothing to do. It's what I used to run my server on before I got the boxx server. It's already setup with 10 pro, it'd be easy to throw some remote software on there and forward a port or two for you.

Slight update - it turns out my OC was unstable.

Bringing it down to 4.35 worked.

I have to leave for school in 15 minutes, but once I get home I'll set it up again.

Would have loved to put this back in use but no more AGP :*( been rocking this thing until last year. VGA fan failed so i just strapped on this case fan with a fan speed controller and a siren so it starts screaming if the fan dies and made sure to fill all the gaps around the fan with hot glue so all the air gets pushed through the fins under the shroud making a way better cooling than it was originally

Check out those washable fan filters! You can remove them without removing the fan by undoing 4 wee tiny screws that hold a ring the mesh is molded in to.

switch more to green and you got yourself a borg half cube? also maybe switch to a fully modular power supply. those connectors cant be hidden :X

I picked up a IBM Thinkpad recently, a T42p. It has a Radeon 9600 in it along with 1gb of ddr ram. I swapped the 60gb hard disk that was in it with the 80gb one from my T40 and fresh installed Windows XP. I also have a T43p and all 3 can use the same battery which is pretty convenient. I still need to grab a new battery or two for them, they're apparently still available. I picked up a new one for my T61 from Amazon a while ago and it was quite cheap.

I love the idea of the green haha borg half cube for the win! Modular power supplies are definitely nice too but there is definitely a premium for them.

Your video card that you attached a case fan too, I remember doing something similar to my All-in-Wonder 9600 back in the day when the fan died. I didn't use a case fan but another small fan and just screwed it down on top. Whatever works to keep it alive!

That's a really nice build, it's pretty cool the whole thing being see through, makes cable management all the more difficult as you can't cheat and hide it away! 😛

Forgot to say that my 2570p is also near 10 years. I upgraded it from i5-3320m to i7-3720qm, it's so big a performance bump that even now beats the 10210u. And about HD4000, with dual channel memory, the performance is also very impressive. Take cloudgate for example, HD4000 is 50% better than a 3427u due to the TDP limit. Also I tired eGPU on expresscard 34, which is PCIEx1 bandwidth. It's not hot plug, nor can use build-in display, but the performance is also impressive. The picture is w/ my old GTX660 3GB and performance loss is not too much.

I replaced the original 2.5" HDD to a SATA SSD. It has no MSATA though. Then I changed the DVD to a DVD-HDD port and installed a second HDD. Recently I found that the mini PCIE has an adapter to switch to a M.2 slot but 2230 standard. I may try someday to check if M.2 SSD or M.2 WiFi card is available. There is also a new developed expresscard to M.2 SSD adapter. The BIOS does not support NVME though, it can be used as extendible storage.

I also replaced the original charger with a GaN charger with a cheat cord to get correct voltage. Finally I got the expresscard to a USB3.0 adapter to extend the USB3.0 port.

The old business gear has so great expendability to play with. And recently I even got HP's BIOS patch for meltdown and spectre bug. I think HP's consumer department should learn more from HP enterprise department to make more fine products.

@birdhumanWell... I don't think this laptop is old, but I also have two HP EliteBook 8470p, which are quite similar, but with 14" screens. This "mini PCIE has an adapter to switch to a M.2 slot but 2230 standard" I find interesting. My laptops have two mini PCIe slots, one for the smaller cards and one for the bigger, so I have one free slot (might be something interesting to try out). Both my laptops have SSDs in them instead of the HDD, but I've kept the DVD drives since I use them more than I would use the extra space replacing them with HDDs (full specs of both in my signature), but I don't consider them old enough to post pictures of here. I'd get a 4 core 8 thread i7 (like yours) for the laptop I use for university (one of the 8470p I use for univeristy and I take it with me there, the other one stays at my grandparents' house), but they are hard to find and expensive.

Lots of stuff that i stole rescued from trash bins outside the IT department at school, and stuff I rescued from computer classes in school. The whole point of those computer classes was to deconstruct computers to like learn how they worked, which mainly ended in smashing stuff because I was the only computer person there. Anyway, I saved some old LGA motherbaords idk what socket, some AM1, AM2 motherboards and CPUs, and several floppy drives because I like them. Also, a graphics card that doesnt work. I don't know what it is, screen is black when I plug it in and it has a generic cooler with no indication of manufacturer. I think it's a GT 710 or something like that.

Found a photo of my best gaming rig back in 2006 when the whole black light and cathode tubes was a thing. yes i bought blacklight paint at Spencer's at the mall and colored my hardware. I would like to say i was an RGB.1231108338_2006gaming.thumb.jpg.69f0d991115ee8f2785cc85d0fd2c3cd.jpg pioneer in a way and yes that is a printer port in neon green on the left.  I dont remember all the specs but it was Core 2 duo, 4gb ddr1 ram, Asus board and a i'd like to say Nvidia GX2 very odd card that had 2 pcb's strapped together because it was like dual GPU paid 750 USD at a local computer shop they were all thinking i was crazy for needing a beast like that (linus did a video of similar gpu last year or year before that) no ssd's back then so i had sorry cant see it but i had Western Digital raptors in raid 0 and there was a total of 3 drives (non windowed sadly)
