It's actually not that hard, the most time consuming part so far was sourcing parts, really all you need is a PCB (hot swap or solder), keyboard case, mounting plate, switches, keycaps, and that's about it. It would be pretty easy for you haha. 

 

@Eschew has a great post on this, it goes in great detail and covers everything you could possibly need to know.

Yeah they definitely screwed themselves over. Yeah playing around with the hardware is very fun, I've gotten really into it over the past 2 years.

That's pretty sweet, it's a pity they didn't do well in North America. Ah so many neat old machines, there's definitely a few I'm gonna have to keep my eyes out for!

Absolutely! It's the fun and history for me, and that I'll be able to show my kids how it progressed and what it used to be like.

My old ATI Radeon 4850 graphics card with a big time for its day 512 MB of memory. 

I bought it at Circuit City way back when. Now that really dates me. 

Been meaning to throw it in the trash with the rest of my old computer junk but just have not gotten around to it yet.

Linus needs to start series of videos on cool projects to do with old computers that collect dust. Something not to old that is a true collectible vintage, but sometimes like up to 15 years old. For example I have been sitting and thinking what to do with couple left over MBs that were used in mining rigs. They have Celeron or Pentium 2 core CPUs and 4-8 GB or ram. ( Linux machines, cardboard case challenge ?) I just found another mini itx board that has embedded 4 core 1.5 Ghz AMD CPU with passive heatsink, that was a mini rig. That will be my PFSense router, started building it today, found a use for my glorious WD Raptor 10k rpm sata HDD. I recently recovered it from a my pc which I left in mother's home overseas back in 2007. That was my boot drive at that time. That will be a boot drive for my router now(funny that router nowdays will be faster than PC in 2005 era )

I still have one of those boards!  Ran a minrcraft server when it first came out.  8gb of ram and 2x 3.8ghz xeons made a nice home server.  At least when MC came out.

Found this old Aopen Aeolus GeForce 6800 GT 256MB gathering dust the other day. Was running this around 2005.

My Uncle's 20 year old Duron 1000 based desktop, which started having issues 15 years ago. Bonus points for the near cap lift off:

I'm going to be re-capping it, and swapping it for my Abit VP6. With it's dual PIII 1000, 2GB RAM and a Geforce 6200A (current card is a 64MB Geforce2 MX400). It cost him $2300 back then to have it built. And that's with 128MB RAM and a 40GB Deathstar.

Ok well i just got this computer from my grandma. It has "DD2" ram(well thats what they say), an intel pentium, and windows vista. all the stats i know rn, untill i decide to take it completely apart.

A bit back, I posted one of my older systems, a Shuttle XPC SG31G2.

For fun, I maxed out everything I could on it.

Core2Quad 9550

120GB SSD

DVD-RW

GT 1030

4GB DDR2 RAM

Windows "9" (windows 8.1 industry embedded pro, with a win7 skin on it)

 

Hooked up to a 28" 120Hz 4k monitor.

 

Doesn't play 4k (not strong enough, wasn't really surprised TBH)

Anyway, don't really have a use for this, I just like building systems.

Sans the 4k monitor, whatcha think it's worth, in USA money?

Unfortenately I haven't got my first PC anymore, a 486 dx2 50 that ran 24/7 for years as  server without a even a heatsink on the CPU (we were living wild in those days  ). But from my own 'museum' some specials: an old Sony mini laptop (PCG-141C) with a Transmeta Crusoe processor (co developed by Linus Thorvald!)  and my Nokia 770 internet tablet with a foldable keyboard and the navigation kit. 

It all still boots and is complete.

 

The Sony originally came with Windows ME. I replaced that straight away with Gentoo Linux with Openbox and it worked well to watch .avi's in the train.  Unfortenately the HD in the Sony crapped out. At first is was dead when I booted it today. Now it is awake and makes a terrible noise. I tried to remove it as I don't have a spare IDE 2.5 inch left, but is is a bit too hard to get to, so I'll just leave it.

On the picture there is also a PCMCIA card for LAN and... 56k6 modem. Don't have the cables anymore that came with them so it's useless now.
