I'm thinking about how yellow fog lights would look on my car, any thoughts? These are pretty much the only pictures I could find on the internet.

It's a nice retro look. I love those lights because they are not the new ones which blind you even in the day. I think those are the LED ones or something or the ultra-bright ones you can get. Like the speed limit is 100 here you don't need bright lights to drive that fast. I hardly even use my high beam if at all.

I'm collecting data for a project on the relationship between an engine's rpm and it's temperature, and I'm seeing how fast the engine reaches 80C using a spot on the oil filter to take the temps from. At 1000rpm, it takes 17 minutes to reach 80C and 11 minutes at 2000. My question is: how does fuel consumption vary between 1k and 2k rpm? Because of these results, I'm guessing the engine doesn't actually use twice the amount of fuel. Is this correct, or does fuel consumption scale linearly with engine speed?

it doesn't use more fuel necessarily.

Hence why my miata can average 30mpg @ 75mph despite running at a much higher RPM than most other cars at that speed (3700 rpm).

RPM in theory affects economy a little however as you're going through the combustion process more times per minute.

In practice, at low, consistent loads and higher rpm you can run the fuel mix a little leaner which kind of compensates.

There are a lot of factors at play here. Free-revving, an engine uses very little fuel. Under load (propelling the car), an engine will use a lot more fuel, because it's doing a lot more work. And then there is how much load? 10%? 100%? What's the throttle position? The ambient air temp is also a factor. Cooler air will produce more power but also use more fuel. Warm/hot air is the opposite. You also have to consider volumetric efficiency at various engine rpms, theottle positions, loads etc.

there's so many factors for efficiency on combustion engines lol.
there's this but there is also the fact that high load, low rpm is one of the most efficient ways to get accelerate your car. (not wot, but pretty well open throttle at low rpms)

 

despite the richer fuel mixture that you'll likely encounter in these situations, the advantage you get from the engine not having to do much work to get air into the cylinders apparently helps a ton:

Anyways, my dad said that the clutch pedal in his Corolla has started to feel a bit funny, so it may be time for a new clutch. I'm kind of surprised that it's lasted 130k miles with a driver that doesn't know that much about making it last long. I did notice a while ago that the rpm of the engine seemed to hang a bit high under hard acceleration, but I thought it was just because I wasn't paying much attention to what my foot was doing on the clutch; maybe my suspicions were correct.

you shouldn't really hover your foot over the clutch anyway

My left foot is always on the dead pedal when I'm not using the clutch, and I'm really strict on myself about managing the transmission. What I meant was that I thought my left foot was releasing the clutch slower than it really was, which would give the effect of a slipping clutch. At the time, I didn't know that the clutch really was slipping, so I paid little attention to it.

Yep. You can actually get better acceleration in high-load, low-rpm situations by using part-throttle (1/2 to 3/4) vs WOT, as you said.  What's happening is the restriction of having the throttle partly closed increases intake air velocity and because air has mass, it has inertia. Thus, this increases volumetric efficiency (how well the cylinders are filled with air/fuel). At WOT, the intake air velocity is slower and the engine just bogs due to lower VE. :) 

 

I do this in my Elantra all the time to get ahead in traffic off the lights; accelerating with about 1/2 then to 3/4 throttle input from a dig (stand still). The engine doesn't rev as high and shifts at lower rpm points but the car still accelerates quicker off the line and nearly as quick once up in the meat of the torque band of the engine. It also doesn't use as much fuel doing so.

The 6 speed auto trans has nicely balanced gear ratios which helps it a lot.

Yeah, that was one of the selling points when I was doing research at the time. It's a 2013. The Corolla even then was still a 4 speed.

i really was dumbfounded by the fact that a car that new had such a backwards transmission technology. now the new ones have CVTs which idk is worse or better, but 4 speeds was definitely inadequate as hell. should've gone with the 6 speed stick.

i was still put off by the bland looks of the elantra, but this corolla definitely leaves a lot to be desired. the only thing that really separates it from run of the mill corollas were the 18 inch TRD wheels but even those seem like a dealer installed option.

Right, that just seems weird. 4-speeds were never good at cruising either lol, I have my own gripes about my truck's.

Neighbours are gonna love me now, cold starts are stupidly loud. Car only has a cat in the system to quieten it. All it needs now is the same setup but 3"

You have cats? That's the most restrictive part. What is this weak sauce. The turbo is a muffler. Nothing else needed.

Is the down pipe stock? Cause aftermarket catted pipes are almost always more expensive than catless, for obvious reasons
