Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 150k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

Yep! Things like supercapacitors will likely change that though.

We are in desperate need of new battery tech. For everything, not just cars.

Yeah..

When i'm seriously wondering if i should charge my phone once more before going to a car meet then the battery tech isn't great..

+ The last time i went to a car meet i took tons of pics. But when i got home most of them were gone because the fucking thing saved them to the phones memory.. Instead of the memory card

Take a bunch of power banks and a car charger with you...

Or go all out and carry around a 12V car battery and an inverter....

why don't we have smaller, lithium car batteries?

They should theoretically be smaller while having the same capacity and also will maintain output longer as their charge goes down..

iirc lithium batteries are prone to exploding when physically deformed... you do not want a lithium battery exploding in the event of a car crash...

I own two power banks. But i've never used them  -_-

I do have a car charger though. But it doesn't charge very quickly

Basically this ^

But regular car batteries are pretty explosive as well. In different circumstances

I've seen about six explode so far

Its pretty easy to blow up a car battery, especially if its bad and being overcharged. It emits hydrogen sulfide I think. Its why you should always plug the negative to a body ground and disconnect the negative first when charging or jumping a car.

High voltage batteries I'm not sure... they've been on the market for a while now. Haven't heard of any blowing up. Though gas is flammable, and if a fuel tank ruptures in a crash its probably going to catch fire as well.

When i can get further in a 350 powered chevy and refuel faster then the tech of electric cars hasn't advanced to the point of being a viable alternative

Put in two gas nozzle ports on your vehicle and use two pumps to fill up twice as quick! :D

They have these but I'm not sure how well they work... Plus it's something you have to piece together yourself.

So apparently the water pump in our little protege is going bad. it's making a loud racket and i think it can only get worse. but i think it's our fault for buying cheap parts off ebay. luckily, we have a brand new one oem as well. but to remove it, you have to remove the timing belt, and that's gonna be a bitch.

So when should you change a fuel filter?

We do it every tune-up at the shop, however modern cars can go 70-100k without needing a tune up. Too long for a fuel filter imo. I'd say every 15-25k.

One thing I learned in school is an old fuel filter puts a ton of strain on a fuel pump. Replace the fuel filter, that strain is off of the fuel pump. That isn't really a good thing though. Each brush in the motor has a spring that presses it onto the commutator bar. When it works harder those springs get hotter and become weaker. It also wears into the commutator bar. When suddenly it has to work less, those brushes can contact the commutator bar less. It can result in a dead fuel pump shortly after.

honestly, don't know why he wouldn't buy a protege. if it were me, i wouldn't buy anything OTHER than a protege. i can trust one of these things to go over 400k without major issues, and plus, parts for them are actually cheap. And probably the pictures make the interior look worse than it really is. it should be a full black/ silver interior. Plus, our protege hasn't ever burned any oil, considering how frequently its driven.

Why not an 80s Toyota pickup? Sure, maybe not gas efficient, but it's basically bulletproof, you can't destroy a Hilux.

actually, the 1980s toyota pickups are pretty good with gas, especially if you got a 4 cylinder. my dad got 28ish MPG with tires a couple sizes too big.

the biggest issue with those is the age, and the rust-proneness. also, they are super hard to find with less than 200k miles on it, and if you do find one, it will likely cost 3 grand or more.
