Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

I'm betting that it'll be at the Canadian Inter. Auto show in feb, and it'll definitely be at mosport come July for the TUSCC race. You should definitely come! $20/40 respectively for tickets, plus gas.

Count me in! :) I gotta get out to more event's and races next year. Been away from it for too long. ;)

So my parents are looking at getting either a corolla or a civic for a commuter car. we're looking at the 1998-2002 models, and I was just wondering  which one is going to be more fun to drive? It's most likely going to be a manual (yes!), and HP is fairly similar, along with MPG, but which is going to handle better, or have better acceleration? Obviously civics are pimped out more, but that doesn't neccesarily mean it performs better obviously. does anyone have experience with both?

I had a 2000 Civic SiR (US Si model) with the 160hp B16 engine and close-ratio 5 speed manual. Man, that car was quick, and sipped fuel to boot. Best tank ever was over 700kms (40+ mpg) and that included an autocross event.

Both civics and corollas from that era are stupid reliable. I beat the absolute snot out of my civic from 90k kms (when I bought it) to almost 300k kms (when I finally sold it) and it ran strong as ever the day it left me. ;) Proper maintenance is KEY! Keep the car in good working order (regular oil changes every 10k with full synthetic, etc.) and you're laughing. I would say, go test drive a few and see which ones you like better. My civic was the performance model so I don't really know which is faster or more fun to drive out of the more "normal" models, but I assume they're very similar.

This is what the S10 looked like after all was set and done.

Not sure which is more impressive, how well Chevy built this truck in the 90s. Or how we walked away mostly fine, after kicking out the door:

This is what Justin looked like. Thank god we were fine:

Glad you guys made it outta that. Never really credited S10s for their safety. Just figured they were typical 90s trucks.

Hey guys, I got a quick question.

I have a 98 Camry and maybe 3-4 times a month, when I start the car, instead of cranking, it's just a high pitched screeching sound coming from under the hood. I would then take the key out and put it back in and sometimes it will do the same thing so then I take the key out and put it in again and then the car starts right up. It has never done it three times in a row.

Do you guys know of anything?

Go all out and put it in a Twizy or in a Fiat 500...

As for me... Alto/Celerio Hayabusa Turbo + FR conversion is the dream build... (in proper sleeper style to f*ck around with the ricer civic and elantra owners)

Most likely loose serpentine belts.

Pardon my bias, but definitely 2002 Mazda Protege ES. We have the 5 speed model, and with a cold air intake, it does sound pretty good for a 2 liter 4 banger. Plus, during it's time, it was considered very luxurious, with a 6 cd changer, moonroof, antitheft system, power windows, even factory leather. ours has has 250k on the odometer and still runs strong, though there's a noise from the water pump, but we're replacing it tomorrow. Other than that, its a killer car. Plus, you can find one for under 5 grand too. And it does sip gas too. It gets about 34MPG and as much as 400 miles on a tank.

I probably won't be redlining it, but still, civics and corollas are known to go forever, and proteges aren't.

also, we're looking at something around the $2000 range, and you can find a decent corolla with around 150,000 miles on it for that. my dad just won't buy anything unless it's a steal. (read: below trade-in value)

Actually, ours has gone 250k with many original parts, including radiator, transmission, even the clutch is still original. It's just dead reliable to us.

Too bad you don't live near here. I just found a great condition Protege with 120K on the odo, and it's only 2350 bucks. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/5236356210.html

Flip a coin, really. For a manual, I never liked the stock honda shifters and clutches back then.
