Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

But you wont get much grip from them at those temperatures due to said rubber not being designed for those temperatures to begin with. the tires work best when it's 80F+ outside where they can actually get up to a sufficient operating temp.

Of course it's better when it's warmer out, but they're officially rated for 40ºF and above. But do the treads warm up a decent amount or do they end up around road temperatures (when it's 15ºF~)?

I'd recommend all season tires in the winter till you actually have snow on the ground then I would recommend you do what I do and put on dedicated snow tires.

That's not exactly a practical solution in the very common areas where it will snow and then the snow be cleared the next day, and then repeat for weeks/months.

it's a very solid car don't get me wrong. it's just not worth $20k more than a honda accord... maybe $5k-10k at best.

An A4 starts at around $10k more than an Accord -- $36k vs. $25k~. Although, I would personally try to get an S3 over an A4.

I don't think you'll get a solid answer without taking measurements.

Anecdotally though:

My M3 on Dunlop Z1 Star Specs was useless in snow, and near useless when temps were in the 30s without snow/ice. The rubber hardened to the point that it would break loose very easily. This was fun but hardly effective.

Same temperatures with snow tires, and no snow on the roads, and it was fine. Plenty of traction.

When I lived in CO I ran full studded snow tires from Nov to March and summer tires after on the M3, and alternated between snow and all seasons on the Subaru. There was no contest which was more effective in cold temps in absence of snow/ice/rain. Snow tires are winter cheat mode and absolutely are worth it over all seasons, even on an AWD Subaru-- enormous difference.

Fun fact-- track pads really really really don't work at 17F in snow. Learned that lesson when I had to make it to class and the only car with snow tires on it was the M3. The week before was when I learned that Star Specs were useless in snow when it snowed two inches and I had to bum a ride home.

Hello all and happy new year! I’ve been kinda absent for the last month or so. Been busy. But, I have returned, and with a new toy!

1996 Tacoma with 265,000 miles on it, and it’s fair share of rust. Frame has been patched though, so it’s safe. P.O. has a cheap-o cherry bomb glass pack put in instead of a decent muffler, so it’s heckin loud.

3.4L 5VZ-FE

5 speed manual

4x4 with manual front lockouts.

it runs and drives nicely aside from a check engine light due to a bad O2 sensor. I plan of fixing the body rust this spring once it thaws out.

Also, the nasty yellow bug deflector has been spray painted white. No pics with that on yet.

I know how bad P Zeros are in the snow. The car will want to fish tail down a flat road at three miles an hour if there's even the slightest dusting of snow, and I can even have trouble getting out of the driveway if there's even a bit of snow/ice (I've gotten stuck once and almost got stuck in the driveway two other times). And when it's very cold it feels like it's a bit loose, but it's a bit hard to tell if that's just my imagination or if it's seriously very loose to the point where even on a clear highway I feel myself holding back taking a turn. But it's just something that seems a bit odd to me given that the tires should heat up when driving anyway negating much of the cold problem.

Regardless, I was thinking of getting a set of Alpin PA4s.

miata is about to cross 113k miles... which puts the engine (replaced at 105k) at ~73k miles

(supposedly had 63k on it... but im just using 65k as a *safe* estimate)

im starting to wonder if my whole japanese engine idea will hurt me in the long run. 10.5:1 compression will certainly limit the amount of boost I can run from a supercharger lol. but at the same time it wouldn't take as much boost to make x power. so idk if it would be an issue so long as i just keep things reasonable like i was planning to do anyway

+ by the time i can afford a supercharger i may have money to put rods/lower comp pistons/good bearings in it so it wouldn't matter

hey guys,

so i was thinking about making this a topic but then thought it would attract more car savy people in here:

im thinking about getting a new car right now and id like to discuss some options with people who know stuff.

im not sure yet if i wanna go diesel or petrol with the whole regulations thing going on right now but here is what im considering:

- Peugeot RCZ Facelift from 2012 (considering all engine variations, do like the interior of the 'R')

- BMW Z4 E89 sDrive23i (like the whole design of it in and out and woud consider the lowest end 6-cylinder version)

- BMW 1xxd (more reasonable option, dont care for the exteriir but do like the interior and that BMW control knob in the center console)

im only talking about design because i have no clue about engine and i would be interested to know what others think. which engine is more reliable...and so on? in general im looking for a coupe in the 10-20k range

im open to other suggestions so feel free

You want reliability? Anything German

You want cheap maintenance? Anything not German

You want to have a nice and fun sporty car? (from those 3 options) That Z4 (RCZ is also pretty nice, but FWD instead of the Z4's RWD)

You want a nice sounding engine? Petrol

You want nice MPG's n shit (low l/100km)? Go with diesel :|

You want to save a few bucks and don't want a diesel? Get a petrol and LPG convert it. (European fuel prices are shit, I feel you, but LPG is like 70 cents per liter)

Coupe 10-20k? https://www.autoscout24.de/angebote/bmw-135-i-coupe-m-sportpaket-m-fahrwerk-navi-xenon-benzin-schwarz-6bf8152c-7d44-4c74-8c33-d349ce121b89?cldtidx=5

The 135i might be a bitch when it comes to fuel tho... So, maybe this?

I can't say get an auto or get a manual, because that is very subjective.
