A year ago, a DDoS attack caused internet outages around the US by targeting the internet-infrastructure company Dyn, which provides Domain Name System services to look up web servers. Monday saw a nationwide series of outages as well, but with a more pedestrian cause: a misconfiguration at Level 3, an internet backbone company—and enterprise ISP—that underpins other big networks. Network analysts say that the misconfiguration was a routing issue that created a ripple effect, causing problems for companies like Comcast, Spectrum, Verizon, Cox, and RCN across the country.

 

For anyone like myself working in IT today was a fun one when you talk to an ISP for a customer and realize that not only is internet spotty with outages across the nation but its also across multiple ISP's.

 

(first time posting a news topic so any advice on how to better do it in the future would be appreciated)

My router decided to reset itself back to factory defaults a few days ago. Today when i tried to use it with my phone, it only connects to my mobile network and not through my router. I wonder is my home internet not working or my router has again reset itself back to factory defaults. Don't have time to troubleshoot at the moment.

My ISP is Telstra, and my internet connection went down nearly a week ago, but Telstra does have the occasional internet outage, but it generally gets fixed within a 30mins. My older router was crap, there were constantly internet outages, and since I have upgraded to the newer NBN standard, I havent had one problem. I did have an internet problem with my other ISP Dodo, where the internet connection wasnt connecting properly, so I had to wait 2 weeks for a new router to arrive by freight which was annoying at the time. So in reality, every ISP has their own problems that occur every now and again.

Errors in routing occur every now and then... sometimes there are only a few IPs bothered by that, sometimes it can hit huge ranges. 

 

I really often see routing issues between the great providers like Verizon, Telekom, Comcast, Level 3 where everything is going well until you cross the networks... 

 

A nice tool to find the culprits, and I know I repeat myself, is Pingplotter... shouldn't be missing in an Admins Toolstick.

I definitely agree even on local networks I've seen errors occur with everything setup properly and even seen a decent amount of outages being here in the bay from different ISPs and they're usually sorted out pretty quickly assuming there isn't some sort of physical disaster. But neither I nor my boss who had been doing IT for more than 25 years have ever heard a customer support rep from an ISP say "nation wide outage". But for the future I will definitely be adding Pingplotter to my tool kit.

How and why Century Link was able to purchase a backbone provider is beyond me.

That's also one of the awesome things about being a top tier internet provider, another provider can make a configuration error that kills your network without you being at fault or even involved at all.

OOoo pick me I know!! I know!! They probably have a surplus of money by charging gay ass amounts of money for shit internet. AKA advertise $20/month for 60Mb/s and show 10Mb/s as the lowest you can buy then tell you you can only get 750Kb/s at $140 a month and you need to add a land line because it's actually cheaper to pay for a land line and spectrum then it is to not even though I can't even get spectrum but it's cheaper to pay more for it then not at all. Yeah.....or someone has the bright idea to un-white list your network.  Talk about wanting to strangle someone across a phone.

Or, switch the frequency on their end on a sat connection without calling like they said they would.

 

If there one thing I learned with the small experience doing some basic net admin tasks, backup all the configs before doing any changes which is super easy to do with Putty.

Level 3 has a highly automated network control and routing system so for a misconfiguration to have such an impact, someone with very high permissions would have to be responsible.

I was wondering.  I know there is software like solarwinds that allows updating configuration across multiple switches and routers (never messed with the software myself since I have yet to be put in that high of net admin spot - heck, I am suppose to be a sys admin while on orders).  Would think someone with higher permissions have a least the knowledge to backup the configurations before doing a change.  That way, when you do one of those "O, crap that not the right net mask or that the wrong net ID moments", the configurations can be flipped back to the working ones.

It was a BGP hijack from most reports. You dont need high level of permissions at all, hell you dont even need to touch anything on Level 3's side. 

 

BGP is almost like a map for tier 1,2,3 providers and tell where traffic should go. When a change is made it propagates and updates on other providers. So one malicious BGP could take down the internet, as you see it did.

Didnt appear to affect NYC. Though at night i did experience some issues with a handful of sites.

I was having something strange happening to me (I live in the UK) the other day where my ping was extremely high and throughput was low even though my modem was reporting a high speed. Rang my provider to have them tell me it was a network issue effecting multiple customers (including myself). Wondering if it was a DDoS attack of some kind.

Ahh, it was that kind of attack. I was wondering if it was that since it's fairly simple to execute but I forgot the acronym so I didn't mention it plus none of the initial reports I read mentioned it.

IIRC there's is fully custom software that can detect misconfigurations on routers and automatically reroute around them. However it was apparently a BGP hijack that isn't avoidable through software like that.
