so much ranting, I read through this thread hoping to find news about this so called titan and if it differs from the titan xp, instead i see a bunch of people ranting about GPU pricings, being butthurt for the introduction of new GPUs, etc.

 

The simplest answer is, if you think the GPU is overpriced, dont buy it. By not buying the cards game devs will get hurt when their AAA title requires such cards to play so even if miners by up the cards it'd hurt the gaming industry when no one can afford a GPU that can play your game.

 

No deal is better than a bad deal.

 

The problem with the titan is that it is a locked down GPU just like the geforce. The titan is supposed to be relevant to those requiring semi pro GPUs which is what the original titan was about but they locked down the original titan in updates and locked every titan after that. They didnt bother to unlock the titan x pascal and any older titan after AMD released the vega fe.

 

Choose with your wallets. Just remember that no deal is better than a bad deal.

 

Just thought i should mention a little history. Nvidia has always been overpricing. They only sell well because of mindshare. I suggest watching adoredTV on youtube, he does his history really well regarding Nvidia.

Well when you are the only real GPU manufacture worth buy from then you can pretty much set your prices. They are a business, not your friend. Also what is considered "overpricing" to you? What you want them to sell at material cost?

no, they can pretty much still make a decent profit selling their GPUs at half the price.

 

Nvidia the only choice? If AMD didnt release vega the titan xp would just be an overpriced GPU with no place for the compute. AMD is still relevant and nvidia is actually moving away from gaming. Thats not to say AMD cant do but AMD never received their share of the market they deserved whenever their products were ahead of nvidia, which impacted their capabilities even more, and the bad deal they had with global foundries.

 

If you really must know, everytime a competitor came out with something better, nvidia would respond with something better at the same price which in the past would be around the $300. Whenever there was no competition, they would price up their cards with every generation.

 

They are a business yes, but is what i would call bad business. The actual purpose of a business is to build others, making as much money as you can isnt actually what a business is about. So when people have to starve to afford your products, you're doing it wrong when your products are meant to help others and enable them to do build themselves

exactly they are a business and know exactly how to price their products to sell

Its a fucking graphics card not a grocery store. A luxury not a need. 

 

And AMD still is not competitive. Just like intel, AMD just doesnt put out so green and blue can charge what they want. And no, I doubt they could make up for R&D charging half the cost.

Still, a monopoly charging as much as it wants hurts everyone but themselves. Just look at intel. Infact intel's history is littered with anti consumer practices. They try to sue everyone that "copies" them or is somehow a threat to their business. IBM did the same thing in the past, any business that would be a threat to them, they will send a team of lawyers to destroy them. AMD back than got hurt a lot because of intel.

 

As i keep saying, watch adoredTV on youtube, he mentions quite a lot of brand history for all these processors.

 

Im not saying any particular brand is good, but any brand that actually provides a good business gets wiped because of the bad actions of others, such as anti brand marketing, legal and so on.

 

Adding many thousands more to the cost of the car because of nvidia's GPU for cars hurts people even more in this economy. They simply cant afford a new car.

 

Now enough ranting and get back onto topic. My point was if you feel the card is unjust, just dont buy it. What i want to know is, what is this titan? Whats the deal about it other than RGB? Is it gonna be better? Have the tesla p100 chip?

so people should just open up their wallets and buy what you want them to buy

most people budget their money and spend accordingly

And I would think most people here would know that, binned or not, you can return a gpu that doesn't run at its advertised clock speed, but you can't return one that doesn't overclock as high as you expected it to. Binning is not a perfect process and sometimes a card gets out with a sub par chip; with a factory overclock it's not big deal, the card doesn't work as advertised, hence you get a replacement. If however you get the card, it works as advertised, but you can't get a single extra MHz out of it, you're screwed.

 

CPUs are different in that you choose the motherboard and there are no board partners. The closest comparison that can be made is with prebuilt systems, and there are some manufacturers that will sell you factory overclocked CPUs. Intel and AMD have no problem with that. nVidia on the other hand suddenly seems to, and the reason is obviously that this would completely cannibalize 1080 sales if they allowed for factory overclocks. They are greedily placing arbitrary restrictions as opposed to simply cutting the price of the 1080 to properly compete with the now normalized vega pricing.

That's why I mentioned silicon lottery for the cpu's they bin chip then sell em. I agree with everything else you mentioned though. No reason to have 3 Titans in one generation nor a 1070 Ti that could have been the 1070 in the first place albeit the Ti version is bandwidth starved as I've seen others pointed out or that would be all in the 1080's grill at stock

How does AMD make any better margins off the AIB for reference designs, they are designs. All AMD does is supply the GPU packages and the reference board design, AIBs still manufacture the cards and put logos on them to distinguish themselves from other reference cards.

 

Supply of GPU packages is very low so it makes it hard to do the required manufacturing testing of custom designs because you are using a larger percentage of stock for something that you cannot make money on, as in you're not selling it to a customer.

 

I don't see how AMD makes any more money from reference than non reference.

iv'e only seen XFX and  ASUS showcase custom cards, and neither is on sale just yet. Just because they sell the reference card with a "insert vendor name here" sticker on it, doesnt make them CUSTOM

i dunno how they make better margins on the reference design, its info i got from various industry insiders/financial analysts.

Judging from their tesla product, none. Seems the performance gap is only up to to tensor cores where those are needed, or just the number of extra cores they added. It seems that Nvidia is blocked at Maxwell v3 and will try to milk that afterwards when process will be better and they'll be able to sell more cores for the same price and just go with that.

Must charge something per card for using the ref design or something then. I've heard the same thing for Nvidia too that ref/FE cost more, should look up the explanation of why/how because it's probably the same for AMD.

the 290x did beat the 780 ( at a lower price), when it was released and now even beats the 780ti/titan, the problem with the 290x was the mining craze that increased the prices and made the card rare to find (before the burst of course), and the reason they refreshed it is that amd doesn't have much money anymore, you cant keep innovating for ever if your products don't sell as much, (they would need good sales a few years before)

when the mining bubble bursted amd suffered alot because they weren't able to ramp down production fast enough and lost milions in the process, thats why they didn't increase production of rx480 much this time around.

btw 290x is a great balanced gpu in relation to compute/rops(and other stuff in the pipeline), hopefully we see another gpu with 40 cus and 64 rops sometime in the future
