What thermal compound did you use?

Is the heatsink making contact with CPU?

Thermal paste needs to be replaced.

Your CPU us overheating. That's why it has been locking up on you from what it sounds like.

Have you cleaned the case out, you may have dust build up, the thermal compound is also quite possibly just old and no longer very effective?

I believe you next steps should be:

  1. get some new thermal compound
  2. get some canned air / electronics duster
  3. clean PC case / fans (don't let fans free spin as they can potentially send current back the wrong way if you spin them up clean them.)
  4. remove cooler / clean old paste from Heat-spreader and cold plate.
  5. apply new thermal paste
  6. reinstall cooler (making sure ensure good contact between CPU and cooler.)
  7. enter bios and make sure no over clocking is enabled.
  8. check temps in bios / windows and see if they have improved.

If you been using the same noctua heatsink since you built the computer in 2016, then the heatsink needs to be replaced.

I sure hope you mistyped and meant thermal paste instead of heatsink

Whoops. Barely slept from work.  Thanks for heads-up.  Just looked up the heatsink model the OP had and re-read my post. That would cause alot of confusion.

Yeah. Thermal paste is what I meant to say.  My apologies for my misunderstanding and incorrectly stated.
