When do you consider the Internet to have been created ?

So after seeing another thread(LINK BELOW) start to slightly De-Evolve into a debate about the above question i pose this question to everyone

1960s - Two networks were connected together.

1972 - Two dis-similar networks were connected

1975-76 - IP Based routers came into existance

1980-81 - Multi-protocol routers came to be

2020 - Skynet routers come online

2022 - Skynet achieves world domination

2023 - Humanity has a new overlord

 

 

So, depending on that, I would say technically 1972 the internet was "created"

Myself, I go off the books I had to read for my career field which stats ARPAnet being the first iteration of the Internet.  Considering the modern Internet still relies on the protocols TCP/IP suite developed by DARPA from funding provided by the DoD hence its other name: Department of Defense (DoD) model.  Reason I had to learn the four layer DoD model (it predates the OSI model) and six layer OSI model.

 

It kind of like the GPS system, funded by DoD then later open up for civilian and commercial use.  Interesting tid bit on the GPS: its original and still on going purpose is to detect nuclear detonation.

The internet in the sense we use it today? I'd say the 90s.

Late 1960's is when the first packet switched networks started to appear.

In 1969 DARPA set up the ARPANET project.

By 1971 there were around 15 connected networks.

1974 TCP was introduced. It originally had IP embedded. IP was later split from TCP.

1984 IPv4 was implemented (separate from TCP). This is the earliest that could be considered a creation date for the Internet, but only DoD/DARPA approved government and research networks were a part of the "Internet".

1989 saw the first commercial networks joining, with the inclusion of Compuserve and MCI. This is the beginning of the Internet as we know it.

Late 1990 the tools for the WorldWideWeb were released and the first web server was launched by CERN. Many people would probably think of this as the beginning of the Internet, but in reality the Web is just a service provided by the Internet.

1998 ICANN (a private, non-profit organization) contracted to the U.S. Department of Commerce started to administer addresses and namespaces on the Internet. This is basically when the U.S. Government was out of the Internet business.

Late 2016 ICANN's contract with the U.S. Government expired and "ownership" transitioned to the International Community.

 

The answer?

1984, 1989, 1990, 1998 or 2016. Your choice.

I would have thought that this was well defined and accepted, but without knowing when that exactly was or if it really is as clear as I think, my subjective opinion would be once computers could visit www.site.com webpages using HTTP just as we still do today.  I don't know when that is but I'd guess in the 90s sometime

except the Internet ≠ world wide web  (but for what it's worth, that's what the majority think the internet is).

 

If I remember right TCP/IP was integrated in the mid 80's ? But even then I think it was still called ARPANET?

Yay for subjective answers!  I would rather know what the common, agreed upon definition for 'internet' is before coming up with an answer of when was it created.  Can probably be divided up based on hardware, software and protocols used...  Personally, I would probably go with the first fully released version of the Internet Protocol, so probably in the early or mid-80's.

Well I'm pretty sure it's formally defined if you want to look into it, but I think OP is looking for opinions

Just for fun, I did do a bit of digging and at least in US law there is a definition in 47 USC 230 (f)(1) of

and 21 USC 802 (50) of

The term “Internet” means collectively the myriad of computer and telecommunications facilities, including equipment and operating software, which comprise the interconnected worldwide network of networks that employ the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, or any predecessor or successor protocol to such protocol, to communicate information of all kinds by wire or radio.

Funny deal is 21 USC is Food and Drugs and 47 USC is Communications.  I'm sure there are probably other legal definitions out there as well in other US Codes and in the laws of other countries...  Would be interesting to compile them all and see what the differences and similarities are between them.

I'd have to talk to him more to get more details but one of my professors at the college I went to supposedly claimed to be part of a team to help get the internet up and running... how much I believe it is probably how much all of you believe it He is old though... so credibility there.

It was always there, it dates back to 1879 as part of a larger gubment control program.  But when the alien technology was leaked in roswell in the 50's IBM started to become suspicious.  IBM, HP and Apple were paid off by the gubment to keep quiet, but as you know keeping a secret of this size quiet was a futile effort.  Eventually the DoD had to create the ARPAnet in order to hide the real reason for the internet.  This is the only reason IBM, Apple and HP are as large as they are today, they got in on the ground floor with gubment backing.  And that's why you will never see a government office that isn't fitted out with IBM (hiding behind their chinese pseudonym Lenovo) or HP products.

 

seriously now:

I personally like to go on the actually definition of these words, internet simply being an interconnected network and not some defined system with arbitrary boundaries and a set purpose,  therefore I say 1972.  (or thereabouts).

Loving these replies guys, It's amazing to see so many answers to a question. I am British so we are told "When Sir Tim Berners-Lee Created it in the 1980's" but i have personally always though of it as when ARPANet came onto the scene.

I'd figure as we use it generally, about early to mid 1990s, although the foundations were being laid decades before then.

If I had my CDC books on hand, I would go look.  Those books I had to study talked about TCP/IP and ARPAnet along with the dates.  That would at least give what the AF point of view on the matter.
