der 8auer x299 aqua exhalare cooled by 3M Novec

Dear Forum Users,

The well known overclocker "der8auer" has built a system which is beeing cooled by 3M NOVEC, which is a liquid that vaporates at 61 degrees celsius.

The entire system is within the liquid. You have to see it for yourself.

Link :

I was wondering if Linus and his team will recreate such a system. Would make a nice video :-)

Greetings from Germany,

David.

So when the liquid evaporates does it have a system in place to recapture the gas and condense it back, or do you have to refill the system?

I apologize entirely if it was stated in the video but I am not able to understand that language.

Interestingly enough 3M lists applications such as immersion cooling for data centers and high powered electronics.

No, only half of it is. Rest are above the liquid.

Wasn't/isn't this common in big data centers. Where they had a heat exchanger at the top of a sealed unit and water ran through the exchanger?

Considering 3M is $200 a gallon, I'd have to say "nope" for this being practical, lol. That's not even counting the solution to recycle it.

this is a cool concept, looks amazing

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Ps. In the first video above( the one with the german language) it is mentioned that upcoming models for consumers will use 3M Novec, that vaporizes at 34 degrees Celsius

It is also said that 3M Novec is a liquid made especially made for this purpose ( non conductive etc. ) and used in larger server farms to "dip" servers into.

Imagine the bubbles a Vega64 would make :D

He's not really innovating anything here.  Novec has been around for 5+ years.  Always been expensive.  Always been impractical.

its completely sealed off with a radiator in the sealed off part where the liquid condensates on. then that rad is cooled with another rad in the front of the rig. so no refilling

Compared to the "old" material Fluorinert at $500 (US) per gallon, $200 per gallon is a darn bargain. That and mineral oil have really been the only mainstream choices for immersion cooling (Fluorinert has been quite difficult to get but far from impossible) and we all know what sort of a mess mineral oil is. Even though it's relatively cheap the mess was never really worth it

If filling up my system would typically cost $2000 I'd gladly take the mess instead.

Another issue with Fluorinert is that it evaporates and is very easily lost and requires the system to be topped off occasionally seemingly no matter how well sealed, thus further increasing it's cost. I have no idea how bad the Novec suffers from this.
