Fully specced out early 2013 Macbook "pro" with gt 650m and constant 105c temperature on the CPU (GPU is 80-90C) when doing anything intensive...

A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018.

Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.

At this point I actually don't really blame AMD: they outta try to sell these fucking things and gamers shouldn't actually pay 1080 prices for 1070ish performance or 1080ti prices for 1080 performance. Bundles are a temporary stop gap but they're unlikely to massively drop the prices for a while, those prices are not real and are the result of the sponsors from Samsung, Mobo manufacturers, etc. Think of it as a covert add that also helps them sell merchandise so they don't pay as much for the advertising since they still sell products at costs or maybe even a tiny bit of margin.

 

But AMD just can't price Vega 56 and 1070 prices. Not right now, probably not for a while. They might as well try to sell to miners a bit while they refine the manufacturing process enough to lower prices for gamers.

Well as a person who does have a preference to AMD I'm all for miners buying shit tons of cards, I'd rather AMD push production up as high as possible and just sell everything. Sell them all and sell many, make as much money as you can.

 

At some point we'll all be better off, either AMD will make enough money to put a big effort in to a major architecture change or they'll split off their GPUs and start making ASICs for miners and GPUs for gamers.

If they get that "scalable" architecture sorted, I can see them putting both GPUs and ASICs on an interposer. For example, they could do 3 graphics modules (graphics cards) and 1 compute module (ASIC) for gamers, and for their pro graphics cards do something like 3 compute modules and 1 graphics modules, changing the ratio of different chips on the interposer.

I donno, i think for all the money you could stick into a 4 card VEGA rig for mining, you could own an ASIC that pays out double to triple, and far simpler to maintain

 

doesn't seem smart to me to GPU mine anymore. casually perhaps, but GPU mining is pretty much dead for supplementary income. Why folks buy dozens and dozens of GPUs with CPUs, RAM, PSUs, and MBs to boot just to mine with is bewildering.

and those that are mined for a pool that pays in BTC, i see no problem. unless you REALLY want to keep a currency you cannot spend commercially. ...for investment i guess?

I doubt AMD is specifically profiling and targeting the mining applications.

But they are continuously working on the compute performance of the new Vega architecture, so mining gets better... unless AMD purposefully gimps it which they should never do.

Vega56 looks like a really good product actually. I would easily choose it over a GTX 1070.

 

Vega64 seems to be a big dud right now.

 

It seems extreme but if I was AMD and supply was limited I would have considered only launching Vega FE and Vega56.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Last time I got into an OpenCL conversation it was deemed infinitely inferior to Cuda. Not that I agree with that. 

 

And thats what drivers are for. Detect the kind of workload and if it's mining shut it down and gimp the hell out of the hash rate. It's the only way these people will learn.

Good luck haveing a driver that 100% monitors every program running, gimping anything that starts to use it in a certain way. That would probably ruin more than a few people's days and ruin any trust people have in AMD

Do you really want the driver to monitor the programs running? And people complain about installing GEforce experience because it has privacy issues....

 

Regardless, you do not have the right to determine what is ok for a person to use their GPU for, they bought it so they can do as they wish.

The thing is, the casual miner is not the problem.  Those people aren't typically buying the cards just for mining (or if they are, they're only buying a handful of cards).  The issue is those BTC mining farms with 100's or even 1,000's of cards.  If the distributors would limit the sales of cards to those people, then we wouldn't have the stock issues we have currently.

Well, not really: The fact that AMD is stronger at compute has been going on for several years now. This has rarely translated into better performance for gamers vs driver optimizations. For a while they hyped DX12 as their magic bullet to translate more of that compute performance to game performance, but well I'd call that at least severely delayed. It's clear that those gains were not as good as expected for most DX12 titles and it's also clear that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

 

So, we've been seeing AMD slide into this Compute > Optimization cycle for whatever reason more and more. And who's reinforcing this? Miners. We can go back to people mining on AMD as far back as 3 generations or so now. They apparently tried again but the card basically looked just like Fiji or Hawaii before it: strong in paper, strong in compute, severely lacking in optimization and drivers. Even though AMD promised better drivers and had 6 months of delays to work on them they just couldn't get better drivers in time. 

 

After years of this story in repeat we have to start considering that as long as AMD moves their stock at good prices to miners, they have no incentive to be more competitive for gamers. Let's not forget that compute could also win them enterprise workstation clients too so it's not all "miners" so maybe AMD should eventually phase out the Radeon side for consumer desktop GPUs. In fact if they didn't need the tech for the consoles too they probably would have by now and it's unlikely that we'll see another really popular console generation. It might come, but won't be as popular and will be seen as just XBONE/PS4 Incremental update #2

True but it's only recently that AMD have actually been selling GPUs in any significant capacity that would allow them to actually increase R&D budget. Having the hardware performance really means nothing if you don't have the supporting ecosystem around it, hence why CUDA is so dominant and why AMD has an even smaller market share in the professional space than they do in the gaming market.

 

AMD has some better technologies for the enterprise sector like SR-IOV support for VDI but we still went with Nvidia GPUs for our deployment because AMD has no market presence and server vendors don't really market/push them as an option even though they have them in their CTO parts availability.

 

Basically it doesn't really matter how much you want something if no one is prepared to sell it and support it for you.

Well if there's any product that might change that it would be Epyc and Threadripper, not Vega Frontier.

 

But hey if they get it done through another avenue and manage to up-sell Vega to those customers well whatever works.
