Intel to Launch 18-Core/36-Thread "Core i9-7980XE" Skylake-X CPU

If AMD brought us dual socket Ryzen people would go mental, like in the old dual FX days.

It was such a beauty back in the day!

In a dream world, I'd be able to run a 4c/8t part and an 18c/36t part on the same board and switch between them as needed.  Hell while I'm at it, I'd be able to use both simultaneously.  Could you imagine that trace routing.  Might as well throw in some switches so I can disable CPUs too.  lol

And I've never cared about power draw, couldn't give a damn. Get a better cooler and enjoy the performance, not like that is hard to do particularly now days with AIO water cooling.

The switching and tracing would be a nightmare, but my goodness I'd do the exact same!

Who needs a "stream machine" then, or a separate render and encode system.

One day mayhaps.

Once again, i'm not arguing. I agree whole heartedly. But its been a sore spot for AMD fans (including myself) for years as one of the arguments that come up against AMD consistently for the past 5 damn years is "LOL ULL SPEND SO MUCH EXTRA ON POWER AND AIR CONDITIONING AMIRITE BOIS??????" and now that the shoes on the other foot nobody seems to bringing up that argument. #shockingnotshocking

EDIT: and if anyone had bothered to go through my post history (lol as if anyone cares), my argument has always been that on a wide scale enthusiasts just want performance and dont give a damn about the power consumption. I've always been in the camp of "if it gives me more performance then keep pumping it full of juice"

You missed this part:

No one is bringing up that argument because these CPUs offer amazing performance, FX's performance was mediocre at best

That's how I know you're a power hungry enthusiast.  We tend to look at TDPs (which tell us nothing for comparison sake) from a whole different angle.

At the end of the day, guys like us don't care about the fluff and buff.  We want to know what the end result is when used in the capacity that we'll run it.

It's because the difference under load between the two is no longer drastic.  It's just about the same, so the shoe really isn't on the other foot so to speak.  They're just the same now.

With that said, nobody can argue that AMD hasn't done a great job because they have and I for one appreciate it.  They've gotten so close that Intel is changing their ways.  That matters a lot!

Ikr :/ I bet that they did this to save costs so that they can be (somewhat) competitive with AMD.... But they really should have soldered them, the die is large enough

Good point.  When that AVX 512 gets fired up, things are definitely going to get warm.  AMD doesn't have that problem or option.  They've limited the choice of running AVX for us.  :D

I don't know about that either, but I'll be glad to use LM this go around.  There were slight gains in delidding soldered HWE and BWE chips and I'll take any gain I can with these hot suckers.

Cooling is legit going to be a problem here. The 18c model is going to really hot and really hard to cool because they didn't solder it. Just typical Intel. I hoped that Intel would wake up once they saw that ryzen was soldered, but nope.

I doubt that you're actually going to upgrade to Threadripper or Skylake-X yo.  I just think you feel like complaining (something you do a great deal of in other threads), which is absolutely within your right, yo!

Either way, the chips are going to be hot and that's a fact.  I for one don't care and I will cool them accordingly.
