ultrawide Samsung apparently is working on 32:9 and 29:9 ultra ultrawide panels

Samsung apparently is working on some ultrawide panels according to TFT central, who claim to have gotten their hands on the Samsung Roadmap.

Samsung are investing in a couple of unique and interesting options as detailed below. Part numbers are not known at this stage:

• 49" mega-wide panel - this panel will offer a massive 49" size, in a 32:9 aspect ratio which Samsung are referring to as a "Grand Circle" format. We knew about the plans to produce a panel like this back in January 2016, but more details are starting to emerge now which is good news. These are the current specs but could of course change between now and mass production. The resolution will be 3840 x 1080 (referred to as DFHD = double full HD). It will be a VA technology panel with a 1800R curvature and a 3-side frameless design. The panel will offer a high 5000:1 static contrast ratio which is pushing the CR beyond current Samsung VA panels in fact. Perhaps most interesting is that the panel will apparently support a 144Hz refresh rate, along with options for AMD FreeSync and NVIDIA G-sync. The panel is due to go in to mass production around September 2017.
   

• Double 24.7" (44") - this is an interesting option in their Grand Circle format. Creating a 29:9 aspect ratio and ultrawide format, this is a double 24.7" sized screen which ends up being 44" diagonal in size. It's designed to replace dual 24" sized monitors really and offers a 3840 x 1200 resolution. It's a VA panel with 5000:1 contrast ratio, 1800R curvature, 8-bit colour depth and a 3-side frameless design. There will apparently be 60Hz and 144Hz versions available and it is expected to go in to mass production in September 2017.
   

• 40" Full HD - slightly less interesting is a large 40" panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution VA panel. This offers a 1800R curvature, 3000:1 contrast ratio and 8-bit colour depth. This might well be aimed at TV / multimedia displays given the resolution and spec. It is expected to go in to production in Aug 2017.

Samsung is attempting to go big on curved ultrawide panels, attempting to eliminate multi monitor setups and go into "Surround" screens. IMO I'm not entirely sold on the aspects ratios in terms of software support, however the idea of one big surround monitor sounds really awesome.

well it is more of a dual monitor replacement, or for gaming it makes it actually possible without the famed bezel cross-hair

Lovely for workstations, but as seen with people into gaming 21:9's all too often require 3rd party mods/clients in order to function.

Not really. You don't need anything to get triples or 21:9 to work. It is usually as easy as an INI edit or Nvidia/AMD control panels.

It annoys me so few AAA developers won't provide out of box support.  Fallout 4 was one which made NO sense, even with .ini edits issues was all over the place with the GUI, yet they pushed Doom 4 out which supported 21:9. GRRRRR

Yes but hangs on my point that 21:9 users have to use clients to fix the CBA nature of some developers.

The only issue I have ever had with my Dell 34u in the past 2 years is blizzards games. Other than that I love 21:9

Hah, I remember when ultra-wide was announced it seemed unnecessary, even regular wide screen look off to me once they took off.

Though this heh, I can see all the replace the two wide screen ones without bezel, using two 24" myself so I can imagine it. Though yeah, seems odd, specially if you want to multitask in a full screen like ways across monitors.

 

Anyway, I'll design my own monitor. It will be 360 degrees circular monitor around you haha.

For gaming, I'll stick to my 7.5k surround setup. Until there's an 8k one at a reasonable price this will be a few years from competing with decent multi monitor setups.
