AM4 B350 Will Support CrossFire!!!

It seems that AMD's mid range chipset will support multi-GPU configurations, but only CrossFire. This actually is good and makes sense for people on a budget.

Everyone knows that SLi is actually a tax people have to pay on 'Z' series motherboards (for intel) whether or not you actually use the feature. The B350 is a budget friendly chipset that (according to early speculations) has some overclocking functionality (if you're Ryzen CPU is the 'X' variant) which makes it very attractive to your wallet.

***CORRECTION - B350 does support overclocking on all Ryzen CPUs.

I was confused about XFR and 'X' variants :P

How I plan my builds -

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

The b350 CAN overclock, and every Ryzen chip can too, the X versions are just supposed to be binned higher for XFR 

Personal build >  New-ish AMD main gaming setup

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Highly unlikely. DTX has been dead for quite a while, and even if it was alive you can't really fit 2 graphics cards unless you use single slot cards, which negates the whole purpose as they're generally very low end.

Technically, a chipset is not required.  The processor itself has a few sata ports and a few usb ports built in, so you could build an ITX or smaller board without any chipset.

The "chipset" is just a hub, it connects  a sata controller, a bunch of usb controllers and other things to the pci-e v3.0 x4 link that comes from the cpu.

Single slot watwr cooled cards? Rads would be a hard fit but man it would be hella dope.

NCase supports MiniDTX. Which has one extra PCI slot, not a graphics card slot.

I feel ya though, I'm in the same boat. But I'm also waiting for the Ryzen 5 chips, and then the benchmarks to go along with them so I have a feeling I'll be waiting a very, very long time. Not a fan of the way AMD decided to do this launch.

Commonly, yes. But it's not a requirement to host both a PCI and PCIe slot. Some have a PCIe x16 and PCIe x1 slot paring, and completely lack PCI.

 

But without single slot variants of cards worth crossfiring, it's a mute point. Single slot cards like that would require water cooling or thermal throttle, which could negate the smaller form factor a bit.

I thought it was up to motherboard manufacturers to have support enabled or disabled....and don't all motherboards with AMD chipsets have crossfire support (as in from when it was with dual GPU cards only, to bridged -later on bridgless- crossfire)?

Why is it a bad move for AMD? It's the same thing with Intel chipsets. Want SLI then pay more for it with some of the Z or X base chipsets.

I say some of the Z is, not all of them can do SLI, cheap ones only does CFX.

Do I need to remind you that AMD still has no upper mid tier or high tier GPUs? This are the prime and only recommended candidates for dual or multi GPUs. You're putting a limitation on your platform on a very high percentage of users since well, you haven't fucking sold high end GPUs for what almost a fucking year now?

 

They should have absorbed the costs of licensing SLI for the lower end chipsets.
