I keep my old Toshiba A70 laptop which runs a nuclear-powered Pentium 4 desktop chip. It's down to four minutes of battery life but I keep the old girl around for tuning my Firebird's EPROM. Need the serial connection for the ALDL cable and Windows XP.

 

I also have an assortment of Athlon XPs; AMD K6-2s; Pentium IIs; S939 Athlon 64s and Core 2 hardware that makes it's rounds across my test bench when I get bored and feel like tinkering. Oddly enough about 90% of it is stuff that used to be my main system at one point in a decade or other.

 

Ugh I feel old today.

I have a somewhat old iPod nano that I bring along for long car trips.

 

Right now I'm using a Siemens laptop from sometime before 2004 that runs a Pentium M 755. It's my "vacation" laptop.

My whole SD station. 27" Sanyo CRT TV, Sanyo DVD player, Radio Shack A/V switch, S-Video and composite cables galore, about a 12 year old Scientific Atlanta SD cable box, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube and PS2. DVD's and pre-HD games just look better on CRT TVs, particularly if you have a nicer flat tube with S-video and/or component inputs. I have my DVD player, PS2, and GameCube all hooked with S-Video.

 

My "HD" station, I specifically use a 720p LCD TV. A ton of PS3 games only run in 720p and look better on a 720p screen. Also the PSTV only outputs as high as 720p (yes I'm one of like seven people that bought one). I have 1080p monitors on my PCs for gaming though. Once I move somewhere a little bigger and get a PS4, I'll make a Full HD station with a 1080p TV.

I still use my iPod Nano 2nd Generation 4GB. Before it held all the music that I listened too but now it holds a small fraction of my extensive music library that I only use to help me get up in the morning. I keep it docked into my cheap iHome alarm clock/iPod dock to give me an alarm tone that doesn't give me a headache when I wake up.

I have also an old dell as HTPC, don't know the specs but it's about 11 years old.

2nd gen iPod shuffle, nearly 10 years running, gym, skating (with falls that have broken bones), getting thrown in the wash and it's still kicking!

I have my parents' old stereo from the 80's. Sound quality hasn't really changed much.

I also use a discman when my mp3 player is out of commission. I seem to break audio jacks from time to time but these older ones are near indestructible.

I think the oldest piece of 'tech' I have & use would be our Panasonic 5.1 (I think I got that in 2005 maybe 2004) & our Panasonic DVD player from 2006, I bought that DVD player the day Steve Irwin died, I was standing there in the electronics store dad & were all "That can't be right, wow that really fucking sucks."

So, I got to wondering, what is the oldest piece of technology that you still use, in a practical sense?

 

For the sake of discussion, let's leave out old video game consoles.

 

For me personally, I have a couple.

 

1. iPod Nano - Second Generation (2007)

 

-In the world of MP3 players, it's fairly old. Heck, I think the concept of using an MP3 is pretty old (crazy, isn't it?). Still works, no real reason to get rid of it. It's great for travel.

 

2. Windows XP Desktop (circa 2004)

 

-It's running an old AMD Duron. It runs fairly smooth. I like to use it as a tinkering machine.

Still have a VHS and old tapes I watch on occasion. Only recently replaced the old Black Diamond 32" CRT TV with a new 4K one. So glad it still have a SCART connection.

I also still use music CDs.

 

Got a working socket 754 AMD 64 3200+ with 6600GT that still runs sometimes as well for older games and programs.
