Would you buy a facebook phone?

nicehat

Earlier this month, Blackberry executives met with their counterparts at facebook to discuss how interested the social media company is in making bid for the struggling Canadian company.

"It’s pretty questionable about whether Facebook Inc would even want the struggling company. There have been rumors for some time that the social network was working on its own smartphone, but buying BlackBerry Ltd may not be the wisest move, especially because as Business Insider’s Jay Yarow points out, Facebook’s smartphone software is built for Android—not BlackBerry.

The software is called Facebook Home, and it replaces the standard Android home screen with photos and status updates from the user’s friends. Yarow speculates that the only reason we’re hearing about BlackBerry Ltd's meeting with Facebook Inc is because the company wants to stir up more offers from parties other than Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. It certainly seems like a big stretch to imply that Facebook would ever want to drop billions on the almost-defunct company."

The picture is obviously speculation.

Facebook has been dying for a while now, I only use it to contact friends and family who aren't gamers and don't have Steam. If it was to be released I can't see it being that popular, as @nsyedhasan mentioned it's a phone dedicated to an app.

Surely there aren't any people dumb enough to buy this.

The facebook app is free. So unless the phone is free then it's not worth it.

Lelel all the people in here claiming no one uses Facebook or that it's dying

no offence but most of us aren't very socially inclined, my friends and I use Facebook almost religiously, as a easy access communication hub, I know two people in entirety that doesn't have Facebook, both are techies/nerds who aren't very social outside the techie/Nerd community.

That being said, I didn't buy the HTC Salsa, Cha Cha or First and I won't be buying this (but I would of bought the Cha Cha if it had better specs.

Facebook has been dying for a while now, I only use it to contact friends and family who aren't gamers and don't have Steam. If it was to be released I can't see it being that popular, as @nsyedhasan mentioned it's a phone dedicated to an app.

Facebook desktop is decreasing in popularity, but mobile is increasing (mainly because those who used it on desktop are now using it on mobile thanks to the smartphone boom).

I use Facebook every day when I can (discussions on groups, posting images of places I new places I see and maintenance of a page for a non-profit business, I also read news from a number of companies that I follow), but don't use it for mobile (ironically) because Canada has expensive data plans and free Wi-Fi is not available where I work.

As for socially awkward and not using Facebook... I don't think those have any correlation. If you got into Facebook when it was really popular and you were in high school or college, you are probably still using it today. Otherwise, especially in this NSA fiasco, it may not be for you. Remember, it is just another social platform like Twitter, Instagram, etc. I don't particularly like to talk to random people or approach people who I may know to a conversation, but I find Facebook as a great tool for that. Plus, how else would I keep contact with my former European school mates? I also use Facebook to keep in touch with some people I have met via IRC.

I don't see the value of BB for Facebook after HTC's Facebook phone was a failure. And although there is no money in hardware, BB do own patents that are valuable in the mobile space. Not sure how that benefits Facebook. It's working great in its current form on Android and iOS. Plus, Instagram integration is really popular. Perhaps BB is trying to sell Facebook the value of BBM, but that has kind of lost its edge with the likes of WhatsApp, Viber, and LINE.

Would you buy a Facebook smart phone if it meant having the security of BB?

Personal Security + Facebook? BAHAHAHAHAHA

Almost certainly no unless it has competitive hardware at a low price and is rootable and the ability to destroy any markings that suggests it was a Facebook phone.
