My first real gaming PC (if you don't count the shit prebuilt with a GTX 210 I had before it as one) cost 36000 NOK which is about 6000 USD.

 

Personally I think it's perfectly reasonable to purchase expensive stuff with money you have saved up, but that might just be me...

First gaming capable pc was 200€ with monitor etc. Current base build was about 900€, last upgrade was about same.

My first PC was free, however I couldn't actually play much on it. My first gaming PC cost me about $300 Aud, however I had spare parts, it was worth about $600.

CPU- 4690k @4.5ghz / 1.3v    Mobo- Asus Maximus VI Gene   RAM- 12GB GSkill Assorted 1600mhz   GPU- ASUS GTX 760 DCUII-OC 

Storage- 1TB 7200rpm WD Blue + Kingston SSDNow 240GB   PSU- Silverstone Strider ST75F-P

My first gaming specific PC was in 2004 and cost around $1500ish

 

I still have it...but the GPU and HDD's are junk now.

Around $3500 (bought it 6 years ago)

 

- GTX 295 = $1000

- i7 950 = $1000 

- You can see along with other stuff like 8GB ram back then etc it was very expensive.

600-700$ originaly. Added was:

+ 30$ PSU

About $800 back in the early 2000's. Bought it for college. It was a Cisero pre-built home-use desktop from Futureshop and included the tower, 17" CRT monitor,  keyboard and mouse.

I'm building my first pc right now, and it's about $1600...this is the most money I've spent on one thing too, and I'm 16. And for your question "is it rational", I'm not entirely sure myself lol. I feel excited for all of my parts to come but I also feel like I might have spent too much..

My first build was around $500. It had an AMD FX 6300 with a 7850. The case and psu were all generic brands.

770 ~ 800$ rig + 179$ for U2312HM

 

It rocks, nearly max setting even such unoptimized WD with mods can go ultra with FXAA for about 45 ~ 52 fps
