By bringing this thing in? I want it to run the latest OS, but I don't know how to install it.

 

Yes the charger is duct taped together

Yes the innards are corroded as hell

Yes the HDD is from an old PS3 (which came from a laptop)

Yes it still manages to post

Yes it is missing a battery

 

How much will the charge me to install an OS on this... thing?

support got dropped a long time ago with the core 2 duo models..

also, out of warranty.

Umm ok your model is LONG out of warranty even if you didn't break and guess what YA BROKE IT you will need a second Mac device to install the OS Update to a flashdrive then work from there people have don't that to full out PC's they call it "Hackintosh" Linus did a vid on that

I didnt break it, I found it in a pile of ewaste

Well, it doesn't support El Captain/Yosemite/Mavericks, so the latest you could install would be yosemite anyway. 

 

My suggestion would be to find someone with a mac to create a bootable copy of Mountain Lion.

I can guarantee that thing does not support Yosemite....

I know if you do some "things" to OSX installers, they will install on older PCs

They are pros when it comes to mac and OS X.

You can make a bootable USB flash drive for OS X on Windows.  I've done it before.  

 

Though I'd only put OS X Snow Leopard on that if I were you.

Currently focusing on my video game collection.

It doesn't matter what you play games on, just play good games you enjoy.

I'm sure you show them enough money and they'll be glad to help, but you can always install OSX onto some form of flash media and install it yourself.

I think it depends on the model.  If I remember right either an early or mid 2009 MacBook is supposedly still allowed according to Apple.  A quick google search would confirm the exact minimum model.
