The perfect tool to help people who love to backup the Internet. Seagate presents a new 60TB SSD, making the largest SSD size available.

Joking aside, the actual target market for this drive is for data centers (hence the marketing line: "Reach 1 PB of storage with only 17 drives!"

 

Engadget reports:

Seagate has just announced a whopping 60 TB solid-state-drive, the largest SSD yet with that sort of capacity.

The drive was created with quick accessibility in mind, and its flexibile artchitecture means it'll be simple for data centers to grow from 60TB to accommodate 100TB or more of data in the future, all using the same form factor.

They also say that the drive will be available sometime in 2017, and no price information is revealed, but you can bet it will be very expensive.

Tape storage needs to make a run for its money, the highest capacity variants are only 3 times as large as this.

 

By the way, wasn't it Seagate who said that ssds wouldn't overtake hdds in capacity for a long time? I'm pretty sure there's no hdd that comes even close to 60tb

I'm guessing 30-40k, but I not sure how much the cost per GB fluctuates at those kinds of capacities.

but tape drives can essentially never fail (theoretically)

That's true, but still - capacity may no longer be in their favour. Especially when you consider how long it takes to write 180TiB to a tape drive compared to what it would take on an ssd.

It's amazing to see how fast storage devices are moving now. I know it's long before these type of technology will be for the regular consumer, but it will hit the normal consumer market some day.

But I don't think thats why corps. etc. used tape drives in data centers

It's one of the reasons, obviously durability and reliability play a part too. Up until now SSDs above 15TiB were unheard of, whereas with 60TiB and potentially 100 in the future it is now much closer.

They said it wouldn't come close for the same price. Basically that HDD's would still be more cost efficient for mass storage (at least for consumer/small business).

So, a full 3.5" drive using 14nm QuadLC NAND. Interesting move Seagate, but the price tag and lifetime will make it worthless.

Even Seagate is proving how pointless HDD's are today. Of course this is an enterprise drive made by NAND Seagate has no control over and will cost just under a car, house, new kidney and a rough night on the knees.

That won't happen. Intel will buy it and swallow the financial setback before it allows a Chinese group to walk off with Micron.

Actually, by my calculations, on a RAID 6 with 12 drives, it should take no longer than 7 hours because it's a sequential operation.
