Nope, aren't intelligent at all :)

It was even proven mathematically that tools like neural networks, on which are built most deep learning algorithm aren't going to create an intelligent being. They will create only an efficient machine which will give you the most statistically significant result, or the result which will maximize the reward based on a few criterion. Nothing with any form of self modification  to the point where it could learn something without humans feeding it anything, let alone nothing with a conscience.

 

And that's paraphrasing the creator of IBM Watson :)

But if they run the same simulation without changing anything it will progress the same. They would have to tweak something to get a different result. This thing is simulating a whole universe down to the quantum level.

Another thing i disagree with is his claim that we are advancing amazingly fast and will either continue advancing amazingly fast or experience a catastrophe that wipes out humans. We have no idea how far we are from obtaining the "best" tech. We could be quite close or millennia away.

I am surprised that nobody has posted this video yet. I think it sounds very plausible. Haven't looked at the interview with Musk but I am fairly sure this video explains it better than what Musk did (judging by the reactions in this thread).

If it is exactly the same then why couldn't you simulate the future? This would break a lot of things

Sometimes when I am bored or cant sleep, I have been thinking of things like this.

 

If we are a simulation, How are time compared to the aliens or things that run it? are we running in super speed compared to what they do? are we running in slow motion compared to them? is it possible for us to actually find out if we are in a simulation or have the people that made the simulation made it impossible? were the aliens/things where we are right now, or are we different? when did the simulation really start? did it start from when we think the big bang happened, or before/after that? Was the simulation started when I was born? Have they edited/controlled the simulation after they started it? How different are the simulation we are in compared to how the universe is for them?

Maybe it's Sims/Zoo Tycoon style super speed (1 of our minutes is one of their seconds). Maybe they can even pause this simulation.

Well it is a reasonable question to ask.  I mean, the universe that we regularly observe has to be finite in some way... right?   ... and if it is, what is beyond it?  Empty space?  What is then beyond the empty space?

The question should be seriously asked, but should not be that hard to disprove ( I think).  There is no meaning to what we know as life here on earth.  We make it up as we go along.  I am satisfied with the realization I have developed for not believing in such a program but it makes me think twice sometimes.  Like right now I am trying to form an indisputable stance against this program's existence, but I am tired/lazy

Being in a simulation just explains where our universe comes from. It doesn't answer where the computer simulating us comes from. You still run into all the problems with trying to understand existence.

Exactly.  It aims to take responsibility away from the individual by dictating that there is an authority figure in command.

 

Someone smart enough to know how to fix our most detrimental current problems can default into this line of thinking.  It is frustrating to watch people/communities take really bad, and unnecessary steps, to cause harm to others.  Someone that believes we do not have control of our lives could mean a level of learned helplessness would start to function in that person's decision making process.

 

I don't think this is the case with Musk though.  What do I know, maybe it is.
