I'm currently living at my parents' house and have never really thought about this. I was going to ask my dad, but he has already gone to bed, so I looked it up on the internet; The power company has several different prizing plans, so I picked the one that I find to be the most likely one: 0.3621 NOK/kWh (0.04 USD/kWh at this time)

Edit: Investigating further, I found that the prize per kWh in my area is 0.252 NOK/kWh (0.03 USD/kWh)

We're a bit spoiled, though, not even bothering to turn off the lights after we're done in the bathroom. And this has apparently become an unintended family tradition for most Norwegian families, going as far back as the light bulb itself.

The rates that we have here in Quebec:
http://www.hydroquebec.com/residential/customer-space/account-and-billing/understanding-bill/residential-rates/rate-d.html

jIUqct9.png

Add to that both taxes

Goods and Services Tax (GST) - 5%
Quebec Sales Tax (QST) - 9.975%

... And you get ridiculously expensive bills unless you essentially live a spartan life. (our bills easily reach $200 to $400 each month)

Electricity shouldn't be this expensive considering it's made out of renewable energy damn it...

That is a lot of power though... what could possibly cause that?  I've heard the average house uses something like 30 kWh per day, so that's a rate of like 1.25 kW.  Obviously this is skewed toward being in the day, so a figure more like 5 or 6 kW probably makes more sense when considering a few PCs, lights, stove, fridge, etc. but to exceed 50 kW?  What are they doing!?

Electric appliances, Air conditioners, space heaters, clothes dryer, electric hot water. It's not that hard to hit 50kW on a bad day.

Well let's try hypothetically :P

  • 2 PCs drawing 600 W each
  • Fridge ~400 W (I always assumed it was much higher but googling it appears they're not so bad)
  • electric or induction stove (240 V x lets say 30 amps = 7200 W)
  • a space heater: 1500 W
  • 10 100 W bulbs: 1000 W
  • Hair Dryer: 1500 W
  • Coffee Maker: 1500 W
  • Kettle: 1500 W
  • Dish Washer: 1500 W
  • Microwave: 1100 W

That sounds like a pretty insane load to do all simultaneously, but please pile on more if you think there should be :P

All summed, that's 18.4 kW.  Hm....

clothes dryer can sit around 3500W  window AC unit around 700-1500W depending on size all of these are per hour fo they can add up quick.

also your range estimate is quite high unless it's a double oven. an oven and cook top should be closer to 2500-3500 unless every thing is running at once then it might hit around 5k

$0.03 at our old house, a whopping $0.19 at our new house (USD btw).

Our new house is so much more efficient that our bills are about the same, even a little less. lol

Funny thing is we only moved like a few miles away... that big of a difference between different electric companies here. Crazy.

Well I decided to not count AC units running at the same time as a space heater ;)

Regardless, I still can't see any normal person coming close to using 50,000 W at one time.

alright lets add that on, and let's assume worst case scenario really high power requirements:

  • 240 v x 20 amps = 4500 W for the clothes dryer
  • there's no heat in this thing but what the hell, throw on another 4500W! xD
  • Same as the stove from before?  7200 W?
  • Toaster would be 1800 W max
  • Water heaters and furnaces are natural gas - don't count
  • Speaker system, let's say 2000 W?

so that brings the total up to 38.4 kW.  Still no where near 50 kW

You've gotta be kidding meh right? We had electric heaters (radiators) and a electric water heater in my old flat and during November-February, our electricity bill was 3x the amount compared to the rest of the year...(there are plenty of homes running on electric heaters for both water and radiators in Britain).
