so if the driver kills the gpu does that mean i can get a new one from rma ? :P if so hmmm oh crap i already downloaded the driver and oh look at this my card bricked looks like its time for an rma

If this isn't an April Fools joke, then how does this driver destroy a GPU then? Serious question.

 

Does it disable fans and safety measures and destroys the card purely from heat? Does it discretely flash a new, corrupt BIOS to the GPU? Does it replace a kernal to force a GPU to perform potentially dangerous tasks and again disable all potential safety measures? Has NVIDIA or board partners made a statement on the matter? Has a single person posted viable evidence supporting the argument that this is an issue?

 

Hell I could say that yesterday I bought 5 AMD cards and they were all DOA, but refuse to post proof, and my statement will be just as valid is this little gag is thus far. The difference is that I'd be shamelessly and pointless attacking AMD, rather than NVIDIA.

It can control the internal voltages of the GPU, thus over volting parts of, or the entire GPU chip, resulting in it turning into a blue cloud of magic smoke.

Look at the advanced OC parts of a motherboard today, and you will see countless different voltage levels you can set for different parts of the CPU. It might not be quite that extensive on a GPU, but there is more than just core voltage to change in the drivers themselves.

So if NVidia releases a driver that changes voltages on Maxwell to an acceptable level, but it also affects Kepler cards, that cannot handle it, then poof. However considering the small amounts of damaged cards, it sounds like a very specific thing.

Completely valid point, but I'm curious then, wouldn't the card have measures to protect itself from that kind of event, built into the BIOS and untouchable from drivers? Say for the reason of protecting the card from a user who doesn't know enough about overclocking or a malicious program? I mean I've been told and was under the impression that even touching voltage on a GPU was completely safe because of those safety precautions, it's difficult to kill a GPU from overclocking, etc.

Generally yes, but a driver might circumvent those fail safes. After all, users cannot change these things in the drivers themselves.

Was it AMD, where a driver stopped the fans completely, making the cards fry themselves? Or was that NVidia too? I can't remember, but the point is that the driver essentially disabled the cards ability to self shut down.

 

I don't know what's true or not in this case, but it sucks when people's hardware dies.

I thought the recent issue was the fans getting stuck at a certain percent, rather than not operating at all. I think it was AMD but I'm certain the issue existed on NVIDIA cards too, but not at the same time.

 

Either way you're right, it completely sucks.

I've two computers, one with a 760 and another one with a 980, both running latest driver and its being working just fine. I guess people that wanna hate will just hate, i guess thats kinda good, blow off some steam OP! its good for you!.

I've never searched for anything remotely religious, and this is the first I've ever heard of "Christian Today", so I question where this profile info comes from. Nothing in my account history, search history, or even ad preferences is anything close to religion.

Does it disable fans and safety measures and destroys the card purely from heat? Does it discretely flash a new, corrupt BIOS to the GPU? I don't know about whether it's a joke or not but no. From all my knowledge and experience with video cards and computers in general (15+ years) I have never experienced or heard of an official driver that could destroy it's hardware. 

 

For the heat/fan possibility, a driver that did that would never make it to the point of being released.  The driver can't and won't flash a bios onto the card without the users full consent and control.  Third question no it won't. Nvidia or other manufacturers have not made a statement because they know that the driver is not destroying GPU's.

The article references an NVidia forum thread where people claim that their GPU is broken because they couldn't get video after the driver update.

 

If these individuals tried booting into OS via integrated graphics, or plugging the OS drive into another PC and removing the GPU drivers, they could have fixed the problem immediately.

 

Instead of using their time to research and fix the issue, these individuals went online to whine and falsely claim that their GPU was destroyed by a driver.

Myself and at least 4 other people I know with graphics cards ranging from GTX 760s to GTX 980ti's always use the latest drivers and none of us have ever had any issues at all. Zip, null, nada, nothing, 0.

 

Not as many people do it here but on flight simulator related websites there's always people recommending to stay away from the latest nVidia drivers. Why???

 

My friend who plays P3D and FSX says his performance actually got BETTER in a recent driver update with his GTX 580!!! Planned obsolescence my ass...
