Oracle is killing off Java for browsers

Jdogbf

http://www.eteknix.com/oracle-is-killing-off-java/

Outdated browser plugin Java is finally being pulled, Oracle has announced. Java will be slowly phased out, beginning with a deprecation of the plugin starting with JDK 9. The advent of HTML5 means that buggy and insecure browser plugins, such as Flash and Java, are no longer required, with Google Chrome already suspending use of Java last year. Adobe has made a similar move, rebranding Flash and shifting toward HTML5.

So the plugin is being removed from existence because it has not done anything for forever. At least it is one less venerability in a browser for people who do not know. :) Html5 is the future. Lets go!

should add that this isnt "ditching java" but instead "ditching the god awful java browser plugin that hasnt been working properly since java 6 either way"

both the regular ol' desktop java, and "javascript" in the browser are still a thing, and gonna be a thing.

honestly, this is old news to me, two years ago was the last time i saw a java applet, and it was HORRIBLE, it barely even worked, if at all.

last time i saw a fully functional java applet was runescape WAY long ago in the past...

Probably not. That might be why they are killing them off.

C++ was already the far more ubiquitous language. The JVM is written in it ironically enough.

Yup. Java can be used for more than just applets though, technically possible to write web applications in Java (kinda looks like an applet, but isn't an applet). Among other things. Some web-based games run on Java too (big and small).

That's a blatant lie. They are killing off Java for Web Browsers.

Repost? http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/536771-rest-in-hell-java-plug-in/

Well actaully not really since he put it in general...... eh whatever

Nope. When News threads don't follow the posting guidelines, it get moved there, or to another section, until the op fixes it, assuming before someone else posts the news properly.

Oracle has no choice to kill off Java, because Chrome and Firefox announced that they'll pull the on plugin's support, beside Flash. Edge already has no plugin support, beside Flash.

If only flash would be pulled next, old outdated security issues and big performance hog.

it is already "dead" for chrome and firefox. In chrome, it runs in a sandbox so there are no security issues. And firefox disables it by default now as far as ive seen
