[Rumor] Intel to announce 5.1GHz Broadwell based Xeon processor

AlTech

Intel-Broadwell-EP-Xeon-E5-2600-V4-635x3

if some Chinese sources are to be believed,  Intel is preparing to announce a 5.1GHz Quad core  Broadwell based Xeon E5-2600 V4.

The rumor comes from several Chinese sources who are stating that Intel is preparing to launch within their E5-2600 V4 Xeon family, a quad core processor which is going to be specially designed for certain workloads. The Xeon chip which is known by the model number, Xeon E5-2602 V4, will be a quad core chip with a multi-thread design. However, unlike any other Xeon or consumer chip, this one would come with a default clock speed of 5.1 GHz which is an insane frequency for Xeon processors. The chip will feature 10 MB L3 cache since each core comes with 2.5 MB of shared cache and the whole package is supposed to operate with a TDP of 165W.

The clock speed for this chip alone is by far the highest default frequency for an Intel processor.

Does this mean that Intel is returning back to the GHz race? Certainly no, Intel is more about efficiency these days than anything else and this specific SKU (if real), has been built for a specific customer. This doesn’t mean that we will see Intel pushing faster clocked chips in the future. Now this specific SKU is still a rumor but we know for certain that Intel is launching their Broadwell-EP Xeon E5 2600 V4 processors this quarter and will consist of several chips that include the 22 core Xeon E5-2699 V4 and later, we will get to see a 24 core Xeon model under the Xeon E7 lineup that arrives in Q2 2016.

WTF is this? Who needs a 5.1GHz CPU?

Auto colour for night theme users please. Also, high price tag + binned Xeon. Kay.

Is that better?

Quadcore CPU with 165W TDP. Yeah.. 5.1 GHz makes sense.

Imma gonna buy four of them and put it in a Super Micro Board, with 256GB of ECC Dimms.

And then play Minecraft. Yay!!!

Shame it's a 4-core.

But Intel has a lot to be ashamed of.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Transactional applications are an example of a frequency dependent workload. There are probably some other single threaded workloads in enterprise im not aware of, but that is one off the top of my head

Well even for a giant like intel, it would be completely unprofitable to try to bin higher corecounts for this. Even so id imagine this would be the big 8-12 core die, with most cores turned off and only those that can achieve 5.1 are turned off. And the best compromise was 4 cores it seems

If the IPC is good, I'd love to get one. Much better than 22 cores at 2 GHz.

Single thread performance is much more important to me than a ridiculous number of cores.

Pare it with NVDIMMS / xPoint and it will be wicked fast. Hopefully I can afford it somehow.

Same thought I am having.  It may be 4-cores, but with Intel IPC, and the fact it is a Xeon - it'd do well.  Some ECC ram and XPoint in the future, and it'd be golden.  Only downside is OEM, but hell, I'd hunt down an OEM machine for one, and rip it apart to have a stock 5.1ghz Intel processor.  Quadcore or not.

Haha yes ;)

Also it's an 2xxxso you can put two of them on one MoBo ot have a vitual 8 core.

But 4 very fast once are more than enougth.

As long as AMD won't do any shit, we are stuck in current 5% increase and 4 cores.

Desktop broadwell didn't overclock that high if I remember, and I doubt a cpu clocked that high could pass xeon certification in high enough numbers, I'll believe it when I see it.
