maybe if the reference cooler wouldn't just be an array of aluminium fins slapped onto the die, it would actually do a decent job of keeping the damn thing cool? Maybe? Ya think?

I'm actually interested in this and want to see a review. I'm thinking of getting a Silverstone KL06 and blower style coolers work best with that case's orientation.

I really hope one day someone will make a blower cooler with a very quiet operation and decent cooling performance.  Or a giant copper pipe system on the inside.  Two blower cards would be ideal.

wont happen. Blower recquires static pressure. Static pressure = noise

I am sure they can get far quieter operation and similar static pressure levels.  Things like that have been done before.  Hopefully it will be done in the future.

After owning and testing a reference 290, this video is actually not that far off. ;) They run hot and LOUD.

 

At least give the cooler the benefit of the doubt :P

 

The blower design just doesn't have enough efficiency to properly pull heat away from the ol' Hawaii die. Even the 980Ti and Titan X reference cards struggle to keep temps and noise down. Just not an efficient design unless it's a lower TDP GPU or you need to exhaust all the heat outside your case (for mITX systems). 

 

They do look good, I will say that. ;)

The thing that made the 7970 cooler good was a full exhaust row - that blower cooler kept a 200W TDP card at 70-73*C and was reasonably okay noise-wise

yes, with larger diameter fans. that is THE ONLY way... unless you want to cheat physics...

 

thing is though, GPUs need to adhere to a certain form factor... so yeah... wont happen.

The 300 series' announcement featured some neat cooler designs that we unfortunately never saw on the market. UNTIL NOW!

The R9 390 bundled with a "700W PSU" was spotted today on Newegg priced at 370$ for the bundle.

that is what i thought they showed this off when the 380x was announced also not that its wildly diffrent from the furry series. i sort of like this reference design
