Windows 10 Start Menu can't handle more than 512 items

GoodBytes

An interesting bug in Windows 10 Start Menu was found by some users., and confirmed by the site Petri

windowscover169.jpg

If you have more than 512 items inside the start menu in total (this includes apps, folders, files and shortcuts), then Start menu's performance dropped significantly fast the more items you have after that point. Issues like taking a very long time for the Start Menu to show, and also reduce responsiveness, and even crashes.

Microsoft knowledges the problem, and is working on a fix to be delivered via Windows Update. In the mean time, the workaround is to clean the start menu, like removing programs putting extra 'crap' items in the Start Menu like: "Visit our Support site", "Visit home page" type items to reduce the number, and remove stuff like "uninstall" items of programs, and so on, keeping the programs only. (Probably many here do that already)

Petri tested what happens if you have more than 512 items, and this is how slow the Start Menu becomes:

Microsoft didn't share when the fix will be available, but it is in the works.

Although I use Linux and this won't affect me, I wonder why anyone would have 512+ items in their start menu.

Every topic I post in dies.

interesting. I wonder who needs 500+ items in the start menu though

When I search for files starting in "Demi" it better not cut me short or degrade performance, which it does. I'm not sure how Windows can fail such a simple task...

"all programs" counts up quickly, every program you install is usually referenced there, as well as an uninstaller, and potential other stuff like update checkers, manuals, etc.

to translate it to linux stuff: its like "/bin" cannot contain more than X items before your system turns into a potato.

Just download Search Everything which is much better search for ALL files.

Interesting, I wonder why it slows after that. It's not even that large number. And yet just icons.

When they do fix it via a Windows Update we'll never know since updates no longer contain a description of the update.

That's not news. If there was a thread for every windows bug, we'd have a thousand thread a day in this section.

You need to be a serious e-hoarder to fill your start menu with 512 items.

PS: I start to freak out when I have more then 2 rows of icons on my desktop

I start to freak our when I have an icon on my desktop. I prefer just going to the start menu and searching, then for steam games just opening steam since its already up 24/7..
