Windows 10 Start Menu can't handle more than 512 items

GoodBytes

I thought this dude has 512 programs which I thought was ridiculous but after seeing the images example I can see how this is a legit problem.

This is labeled as a bug? I would think this is just a terrible algorithm, rather than a bug.

Perhaps they should look towards how Google implements their photo loading in their Photo's app.

So wait who has that many items in their start menu? I think you would almost have to try...

He put 1 image which he copies and pasted a bunch of time to TEST the bug.

The site could have used anything.

It is an algorithm issue or bug.

Well clearly it's having trouble displaying that many items, regardless if it's the same item or 512 different items. It's a massive slowdown, so it's implemented poorly (or at least they never tested it for this many items). These things happen. It's a trivial issue though. Is someone going to have this many items to scroll through?

Another interesting "bug" in Windows, you cannot name a folder or file as "con". But this has been in Windows for a long time, at least since XP maybe longer. Although its not really a bug since MS has done that intentionally.

There are some restricted words with the OS. "con" is one of them.

Similarly to many programming languages, there are words that are restricted to the language and you cannot name anything with it.

interesting. I wonder who needs 500+ items in the start menu though

I have thousands of images with the starting number 14 and if i searched for them using the start menu it would be fucked.

Laptop - Lenovo X230 Intel 535 480GB, 16GB Gskill memory, Classic Keyboard Mod, Triple USB 3.0 Express Card.

But why would you put 512 items on start menu to begin with?

ermahgerd literally the worst OS evar!!!!!!!!!!!1111 (remember ME?)

Realistically, I can't see many people reaching 512 items in the start menu. Who'd even need 512 items in the start menu? That's what the file system is for.

I'm not saying i would actually use it in that fashion. Some people might though. i know i do search documents through the start menu though.

seems like a pretty fringe use case scenario - that said, they might as well fix it.

It is from DOS days actually. Many are restricted else it would screw up with the command prompt.

I thought this was already mentioned in the ArsTechnica review of Win10 weeks and weeks ago?

In Windows 10, it's... different. Windows creates a per-user database containing all the entries that are in Start, both the live tile portion and the All apps portion. This database is (inexplicably) maintained by a system service running as the super-privileged SYSTEM identity. And at the time of writing, this database has the oh-so convenient feature of being limited to around 500 entries. Better yet, even if you reduce the number of apps to below 500 or so, it doesn't fix anything. There's no easy way to make it re-read all the short cuts in the Start menu directory (that still exists, because it's where installers expect to put their icons) to regenerate the database.
