Why is GameWorks getting bashed so hard continuously? Because of the lack of a competing AMD API pretty much. Seriously???

For it to be fair, all games would have to support both programs. However, Nvidia offers incentives to have games built around GameWorks, so it means that we end up with games working on one platform or the other. We'd eventually get to the point where everyone would need one card from each vendor and to switch between them for games, and we don't get any benefit from doing this. If that doesn't sound anti-consumer... Well, I don't know what to tell you. That's why I'm boycotting GameWorks games after Arkham Knight. I'm not going to continue to support the death of PC gaming.

At what cost? Again its a bit of an Argument from Ignorance situation but i'd argue that if it was pure cuda acceleration in that "black box" the black box wouldnt be there. There would be no reason to not have code out if AMD could do nothing with it as they have no CUDA. This makes me more than think Nvidia thinks AMD cards are more than cable of running the gameworks if they had the code. Without cuda.

 

Also AMD offered Mantle to nvidia before it was open source. nvidia declined. So if we wanna play that it cancels out i guess?

 

It still would be. AMD just wouldn't be allowed to talk about the specifics. Nvidia has never really embraced open source. It's a difference of business strategy. Nvidia prefers black box and making stuff in-house while AMD prefers open source and working with outside sources to develop open source tech.

I'm not sure how Mantle fits into a lot of this. AMD specifically said from the get go that Mantle was a project created at the behest of developers, and that if Mantle helped to push DirectX12 out faster (not in those exact terms), than they would have accomplished what they set out to do with Mantle, and would consider it a success.

 

I'm not not where this delusion came from, that AMD were actively trying to take out DirectX, or even compete in the API market.

So we should support no games at all then? As it has been pointed out any game sponsored by Nvidia must use gameworks now and developing without having sponsorship from either one (AMD or Nvidia) just does not happen. Most devs can't afford to make their own engines and engines they license come with the sponsorship and stuff build in so they have little choice but to use it.

Trying to realistically avoid GPU vendor sponsored games would be harder than dodging rain.

Well what we are doing here is analysing to what extent a sponsorship damages the gaming experience of your clients.

 

Sponsoring is done for ages. It's another source of revenue. Something in the likes of "here is our media pack, if you want to show up in 2nd while the game is loading, this is the price - but it can be negotiated!". It's a common practice - you pay to have your brand connected to a certain content, event, game, tv show, movie, what ever - this is done mainly to increase awareness and notoriety of your brand.

 

Now imagine that you compromise your content to favor a sponsor - now that's a big red flag right there. You no longer have a product for your clients, you have a product in the likes of the customers of the sponsor.

 

Is it worth? For the sponsor, fuck yeah! They'll have their brand connected to a hyped game, while their competition struggles to give their customers a good performance! Fuck everything is sealed tightly with a NDA contract, no one will ever know. Maybe their competition customers will jump off their train!

 

For the content creators? It depends - if the sponsorship is worth more then what they are compromising, then sure. It may be bad for their image, but the internet forgets rather quickly... alot of noize for a short period of time, anyone can deal with that.

GPU accelerated PhysX is built around CUDA. That's like telling AMD to completely redesign Mantle to run on CUDA cores. It makes zero business sense to develop something specifically for your competitor.

Major difference here, nvidia can write a driver to support mantle if they so choose to since access to the sdk is open.

 

Gameworks, on the other hand, is so closed off that AMD will never see the code to optimize for it.

 

While were talking about gameworks/project cars, why is the 960 beating the 780 in the benchmarks?

Well yes. Which is why this isn't dividing the PC market, is anti-consumer, or leading into a single-sided GPU market based on nvidia's doing alone. It's ultimately consumers that decide the market.

 

Nvidia ultimately sold libraries they made for their own hardware, because the developer thought they were adding to their game's experience. Whatever the consumer feels about this, is up for them to decide on their own. I, for one, don't find it as malicious as some claim it is.

Mantle is open source but it's designed specifically around AMD's cards. Nvidia would need to do A LOT of work to make it work and quite frankly it's not worth it.

Fans of AMD will point to G-Sync, GameWorks, CUDA, PhysX, FCAT and even SLI as indications of NVIDIA's negative impact on open PC gaming. I would argue that more users would look at that list and see improvements to PC gaming, progress that helps make gaming on a computer so much better than gaming on a console

It uses CUDA as far as I can tell based on other people's input, and AMD doesn't pay the royalties for CUDA either. So even if they had the damn code, they wouldn't be able to make it work.

this whole debacle really isn't nvidia's fault, that lies with project cars for alienating some of their userbase
