[Meta] Can we stop the GTX 960 circlejerk?

I just want to stop the hate for the 960, its not a bad card!.It costs the same as the 280/285 counterparts, it mainly beats the 280, and is very competitive with the 285. And I mean very.

First, our favorite article on the 960 benchmarks:
http://www.eurogamer...-gtx-960-review

Here is also a video from our favorite tech reviewer:

First off, let me say that the 285 and 960 are both better in average to the 280. 3GB VRAM means nothing if the raw GPU power isn't there. I don't really like the 280 anymore, as the 285/960 will yield better performance at the same price. The VRAM on the 280 won't last if the raw power can't last. Moving on, let me address some common circlejerk digs towards the 960.

Q: 128bit bus is not enough!
A: Of course it is. The bus even utilizes all of the VRAM in the 4GB cards. You guys seem to like to state the year we live in, so I'll try it here. It's 2015 people, we don't need a 256bit bus to manage 2 or even 4GB's of memory.

Q: 2GB is not enough! Games require more!
A: Well then how does the 285 beat the 280 9/10 times? Games will use how much VRAM your GPU has. If it has 2GB, it will yearn to use the 2GB. If its 3GB, it will use 3GB. I do agree 100% that in the future the memory size standard will increase, but on this day, April 21st,  2GB is still the standard for a budget card.

Q: The price to performance is shit!
A: The 285/280/960 all cost within $10 of each other without rebates. And looking at my video and article above, this question is already answered.

Q: 2GB will not last! It will be obsolete by next year!
A: Nope. Remember our good friend, the GTX 660? Well its still kicking strong after 3 years with 2GB of VRAM and a lot less GPU power. It still can do BF4 at generous settings.

Have more questions on the 960? Leave them below, I will always have an answer!

Conclusion:  960 is a decent card, along with the 280 and 285. If you're recommending the latter two, which sometimes fall to the 960 (In GTA:V especially) then isn't it logical to recommend the 960 as well? Don't talk about subjects in which you have no knowledge in.

Edit: the overclocking the potential of the 960 is worth a note as well. A decent OC'd 960 will flat out beat an OC'd 285/280.

Edit 2: I do say the 285/960 are better than the 280. But that is not bias, that is fact.

Also the R9 280X, yeah thats another post for another evening.

VRAM = 280 > 960

For now the vram is fine but for how long?

I reckon in half a year or a year Triple A games which are big to play will require more vram

P.S You have a 960 of course you would say all this :/

I usually see people recommend the 280X over the GTX 960. Not sure what comparing the card to the 280/285 accomplishes

Also vram

ok.

But have you heard of different scenarios? Sometimes I do recommend the GTX 960

By the way, if you would set the text color to auto, maybe more people will read this.

EDIT: oh and the GTX 960 is way more overpriced in some areas.

The price is not as good as the US price. Not everyone is about that USD.

2gb is beginning to be not enough for 1080p and specially for 1440p. While a game can work on a 2gb card there will be noticeable texture pop in compared to a 3gb card.

Example gta v

960 IS NOT WORTH! BRING THE PITCHFORKS GENTLEMEN! ----------------E

Jk. Honestly it's not that bad for you to buy it if you REALLY need nvidias technologies like game-stream, shadowplay etc and want to play games like gta 5 only, IMO.

But the 280/280x is a better option in my opinion for overall performance.

EDIT: also 2 gbs of VRAM isn't cutting edge anymore.

its not a bad card. its just the 970 is a greater card. plus the cost for the 970 is a big plus when factored into a build.

Different builds/demands means different cards. Both cards have their pro's and con's and we should not strive for a singular opnion (either of the two). The only gripe i have with this discussion is the retarded people screaming 2GB isn't enough. Because they don't understand the difference between VRAM usage and VRAM requirements.

It's a reversal of cause and effect (also a little slippery slope) people, stop being so dense.

EDIT: Saying retarded may sound harsh btw, but I might have to do this before it turns into another "games are becoming more multithreaded now, dualcores/quadcores aren't enough" argument we had back with the 8350. It's is really just as stupid now as it was back then.

EDIT#2: the only game I know that doesn't work with 2GB is Shadow of mordor, but ONLY with Ultra textures. But shadow of mordor at that ultra settings would run just as poorly on a 285 as a 960. So why does it really matter. And I think that feature just isn't optional with 2GB buffer, but i'm not sure on that. I think Crysis 3 has a similar option that requires 3GB, but I'm also not sure about that. The amount of games that are utterly disfunctional on 2GB is 0 atleast. It only becomes an issue at settings the 960 wasn't designed for anyway. And again, memory usage does not imply memory requirements. DX11 API just uses the resources available, it doesn't mean it won't work without it.

The fact you get butthurt over anyone saying the slightest thing bad about your card kinda shows bias :/

You want to start a debate about this and then get mad when someone replies? k

P.S JC3 is going to be CPU Intensive or balanced lmao do you even open world game bro?

If I was bias, my post would of went like this:

960 is best, amd is 4 poor bois

/thread

But no. The 285 and 280 are great cards as well, holding their own and age. But the 960 debate on here is horrendous. Everyone says one thing or another, without backing it up, and then everyone repeats that on different threads, and it causes a mess. I'm just trying to inform everyone.

Edit: I literally praise the R9 285 in unison with the 960, I'm no where near bias. I bought the 960 because I made a choice to my needs, and also my CPU is shit and would die to an AMD GPU driver

Hello Nvidia Marketing Rep. how are you doing this fine day? :P

The 960 is still the number one selling GPU on Amazon, so Nvidia will sell em either way, but I'm just trying to be help here

They will keep circlejerking forever, they got their "true" fact that more vram = better in every scenario, every time... Good luck changing that. I hope someone can do it

I don't always have time to study, but when I do, I don't.

Its an XFX though, sure its $210. Although the good 280X's start with the PowerColor at $225. The XFX is $20 more than the 960, that $20 can be a lot in budget builds.

Where I live the R9 280X is 280 euros, 960 is 210-240 (or 290 for the 4GB version) and the R9 280 is 235 euros :D

I love this prices!!  <_<
