So the following links are screenshots of a conversation I had, in a group chat, with a second year COMPUTER SCIENCE student at a London university.... badically he has no idea what ram really is

Using more peripherals =/= more RAM usage, although having individual software running for those peripherals do. i.e. logitech mouse software + corsair keyboard + gamepad managing software/etc.

Scrapyard Build Total Cost: $268AUD

To my good friends, I am God of computing. My friend's mom actually paid me 50 bucks to fix their loose cable, thrice. Many don't believe me when I told them I built a PC. I should never have mentioned the term 'hardware porn' among them. Some think I have no life and no future. To most adults, I am a spoilt brat.

i agree man

this happens to me sometimes

So I recently upgraded a 10 year old PC (new processor, motherboard, PSU, RAM, HDD) and my client was really good at navigating software, but she was clueless when it came to hardware. She thought the computer box was the CPU and the whole setup (keyboard, mouse, monitor, computer) was the computer, she had a hard time understanding what RAM even was (especially compared to storage) until I explained it like Linus did in the DDR4 techquickie, she didn't know that ethernet and wi-fi were two different things, and to top it all off she didn't even know why a power supply is necessary (she thought everything ran off 120V AC with no conversion required).

It was very painful but I managed to explain everything to her using analogies where I could to help her understand, after all she was paying me.

On a side note, she let me take her old parts so I'm making a wall mounted F@H machine to help me keep warm this winter.

I've built 3 PC's, but none for myself... In fact, I'm using an iMac that my dad bought for me as my desktop. Awkward...

Please don't say "SSD drive." By doing so, you are literally saying "Solid State Drive Drive" and causing my brain cells to commit suicide. The same applies to HDD (Hard Disk Drive) and PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express).

This thing is called the "hard drive". It's like a filing cabnet, but for your computer. The more gigabytes you get, the more files you can file away.

Pentium G3258, R9 280X, Corsair CS600M, Gigabyte GA-H81M-H, 2 Random monitors, a no-name keyboard, a cheap $15 Logitech mouse.

Don't start this again...

She had no trouble with the hard drive, that was one of the few components she understood. The difficulty was in explaining what RAM does that storage doesn't.

Oh god, My boss is now telling a customer that a Xeon will be worse than an i7 because they're coded specifically for business programs.

I want to come out and correct him but I'll get in shit for correcting him and making him look stupid

Don't or be veeeery polite about it. Maybe just show him the loads of gaming builds with Xeon 1231v3. :)

My modded Air 540 build

Oh now I don't feel so bad knowing it was a shit board and CPU

if its satire or sarcastic please make it clear. over plain text its difficult to tell.

if its not ^ then please just dont say it at all. think about if you misunderstood instructions, and messed something up to the point of no return and saw ''was a shit product anyway''. :) thanks.

my inner AMD fangirl is screaming and tearing her hair out wanting for me to chew you out on this x'DDD but all's good

Maybe lots of people like horses?

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I bought a cheap, 32GB SSD for my main OS. Never again.

oh?

I'm someone who can live on a 32 gig for OS... :/ then again. i've always had a library of harddrives similar to that of the AVGN's game collection...

only in the past 6 months have i gotten rid of them. and forced my self to live on my laptop's 750gig. which is alright i guess. i still have yet to fill up more than 40 gigs. and alot of that is bloat from a schooling program i used to use. >_>

seeing as 64GB will fill up in 5 secs, 32 will do worse.

wut u meen bruh

i don't get why not. like me and my parents like to talk about wincest and tentacles and we often watch that during the weekends

*caugh*

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

can i come over?

I've had lots of experiences with non-techies, some more cringe-worthy than others. However, I won't put you through all of them.

Recently, one of my friends asked me why he needed wifi to play multiplayer games. He also asked if he could use Bluetooth instead of wifi, because his 'house doesn't have a wifi'. He also thinks our school wifi killed his old computer, because it made his PC 'troubleshoot'. He said it as if it was a bad thing, and I... I didn't have any words remaining for that. I've actually decided to take him under my wing, though, in order to better his understanding. It's been going well so far.

how has that been going since you first started educating him on tech? :D

i've been slowly teaching my mom more and more about things she'll need to understand if she wants to continue life with-out any more headaches. :P

she still asks me which button to press to get home on her ipad...

This seems more appropriate

everyone's path in being rick rolled:

not understanding it.

understanding it, but not caring.

trying it out for yourself the first few times.

getting into a war with someone with it.

forgetting about it and getting surprised with it again.

-wanting- links to be never gonna give you up.

not caring anymore.

acceptance.

as in which of the following:

X-E-O-N

-or-

zee-onn (instead of just saying it normally)

So atm I am a year 12 student, earlier this year while I was in my cert 2 I.T. class, the teacher was trying to teach us what different parts were etc, she was reading the information from a rather old looking book, she was telling us all about the parts and what they did, then, when she took the side panel off of one of the computers to show us, she got super confused and told us that the hard drive was missing, after about 10 minutes of watching her call people and get annoyed, I walked over to have a look, and it turns out the book she was reading from was telling her about IDE drives, about how thats the standard for hard drives, she didn't know that SATA existed.
