Experiences with non-techies

I remember in elementary school, when a computer "didn't work", they would put up a sign saying:"I am not feeling well". And then a pic of computer that has a thermonitor. Just lol. Besides, if it wasn't feeling well (virus), it would infect the whole network so nothing would work in the school. Maybe the DVI cable isnt plugged in, or the power cord isnt either.

Also, a computer with an off monitor is not an off PC. One time I was being productive, trying to make a gif, and then my monitor turns off for power savings or whatever. And then my mom walks in my room, and then took my power cord. I start yelling WHAT THE HELL! and shes like, what now? I tell her that it was on, and she kept telling me it was off. I guess she cant see the LED power button that was the only light in the room.

Kinda similar to Wi-Fi bracelets. Guy in my class:

"and you could put Wi-Fi transmitters in the sheep so that they could connect to the internet towers and that way when the sheep walked around the world there would be Wi-Fi everywhere"

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

Oh God, that's just horrible.

My Chem teacher has his smartboard hooked up to his laptop in a dual screen scenario. I was literally the only one in my class that could use it without any sort of effort when we had to do presentations.

My chem teacher kept an ANCIENT film reel-to-reel thing, where the films are basically all in red xD We got to actually watch something on it. He's a pretty damn cool guy.

I still hate Chemistry.

And another one i remembered

True story

I have a friend, genius, IQ of 155, grades above 90, awesome at playing he piano, the textbook stereotypical asian kid.

He asked me 2 questions in succession.

1. Can your CD/usb get viruses if you don't cover it up?

2. Can you move files by rubbing usb sticks together?

He was dead serious

I know a few geniuses that aren't so tech savvy. Many are logical thinkers with proper grammar and excellent math skills.

So I found out that the girl I like plans on majoring in Computer Science.

Really? My chemistry teacher makes it pretty fun and easy! Especially the multi-colored fire! On the first day, she blew fire out of her mouth and taught us why we shouldn't put water on a grease fire. Or maybe I find it fun because I'm a big nerd/I watched MatPat teach me how to do some of the math..

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

I just don't like the Chemistry part of Chemistry. Really difficult for me to understand the non-math stuff.

Might I be able to convince you of the greatness of chemistry and possibly even interest you becoming a chemist for hobby purposes? (For example chemicals like KNO3 and sugar when burned can create nice thick, white smoke or a fantastic fuse when it coats a string)

I like doing chemistry stuff without all of the "You'll fail this class if you screw up" that public education forces down your throat. As a whole though, I don't really like life sciences or nature sciences, that sort of thing.

I know what you mean and maybe it's because I'm in AP chem and have an awesome teacher that I find it so enjoyable. Sure there is a fair amount of "you need to know this" but generally I understand why I need to know said thing. Also generally I don't worry about screwing up anymore (maybe that's why my overall average is only in the 80s instead of in the 90s like I'd like it to be) but then my marks don't really matter anymore since I already got accepted to University for something I like. Sure it's not Neuroscience (need 91+% for that so I just gave up :( ) but Chemistry and Computer Science seem just as fun for me and since I'll probably be doing great in them I may be able to switch to Neuroscience after first year. Hopefully I can study Neuroscience at some point in my life since AI and interacting with a computer though VR means seems to be the future and I want to take part in that. :D

Everything is dependent on the teachers you get and on whether or not you can and/or want to convince yourself that a subject is fun and enjoyable.

I was pretty set on comp science from the get go. I met all of my teachers before taking my classes and both the chem and comp science teachers were cool. Would be happy to have either of them as my only teacher if that were an option. I just don't find chem interesting.

I was working on a school project, and a teacher comes to me and asks this:

Hey Mathijs (My name),

You know alot about computers right?

me: kinda why?

He: i have a customer who needs linux on his laptop.

me: sure i can do that.

*le me installing linux on the laptop*

so the teacher was gone, and i was still with that customer his laptop, so i installed a keylogger on his laptop for the funzies, and see what that guy is doing with that thing.

That customer brings that laptop back because he wanted windows, so the casual story, i install it and so on, i remove the keylogger and see what that guy all typed.

I never have been so scared in my life, so much porn.

Please, follow your own posts and mention me in comments, otherwise i won't be able to help you.

Today my dad asked me to help him with his Mac, because ads keep popping up. I look into it, and he somehow has malware and viruses that aren't even possible to get on a mac. I have no idea how.

Agreed. Keyloggers are not nice. I know a person who had someone else impersonate them as a result of gaining information on them from a keylogger which they got on their computer thanks to pirated software. Yeah I know pirated software is ALWAYS a risk, especially now that most pirates, with the exception of a few, are complete assholes. Of course I pointed that out to him but it's still a rather terrible thing to happen to someone even if it's a result of using pirated software.

So it is really awful when it happens to someone because they trusted an asshole to do a good job of installing something that they themselves were incapable of doing. While he should have known how to install Linux by himself; his lack of knowledge is not a good excuse for installing a keylogger on his computer!

I wish we could live in an ideal world where malware and viruses did not exist but then I'd have to be delusional. (Implying I'm not somewhat delusional already)

Agreed. Its also a bit more difficult installing Linux now due to uefi & secure boot. Things get a bit tricky. I guess some use their knowledge for the worse side of things rather than helping those that need it.

If anyone wants to teach someone chemistry, teach me. I have a $300 kit with equipment and chemicals, and I'm interested, just to lazy to learn.
