iMac with Retina display reportedly in 'late' testing at Apple

Dietrichw

Slow down cowboy. Even 1440p isn't as cheap as 1080p from 3 years ago yet.

but 1440p was never adopted or wanted by consumers.. everyone wants 4K right now they just cant afford it.

many people have heard of 4K and i know many people haven't even heard of 1440p.

so that one company that makes it affordable will cause it to take off.

The highest model used to my knowledge is the I5 4690 topping at 3.9 GHz. Is this no longer true?

And don't for a moment consider calling me a fanboy. I didn't want to buy my MacBook Pro Retina only to get screwed by an updated model 3 weeks later, but I had to for my graduate research development.

No I'm misinformed, but they don't use the top tier Intel unless you buy the top end 27 inch.

If I wasn't on mobile I would have put a symbol to say I was joking about fanboy

My apologies

There have been some rumours about apple releasing a new iMac with a 5K display!

This display is rumoured to be powered by an AMD graphic card.

The new 27″ iMac will use a 5120 x 2880 panel as leaked in the OSX Yosemite code a few months ago

Didn't dell just release a 5k display?

Broadwell CPU’s will “likely be added in an update next year” but Apple is sticking with Haswell for now as powerful Broadwell processors are not available to the market

the new product will include AMD graphics like the Late 2013 Mac Pro, the current iMacs use Nvidia GPU’s.

Apple is “incredibly likely” to announce the product at their next press event.

Yey for 5k display! Wonder if color accuracy will be good and what the refresh rate will be. But way to go Apple! :)

I'll be fine. Apple doesn't really have demanding games to need to worry about driving them at such a high res...it was too easy, I'm sorry. :P

I don't understand why they would use AMD, AMD is known for a higher heat production, which isn't something you would want in such an enclosed device? Something like the Maxwells would make more sense since they produce a lot less heat?

AMD is not that far behind... NVIDIA just releases their top end cards later and they look better... Also probably they have a deal.

The iMacs are know to have heat issues, that's probably why they went with AMD. They don't want to change things up too much. Nvidia wouldn't have been hot enough.

While this is definitely very funny, it is also becoming less and less true with Steamplay becoming more common for bigger releases.

Its not about preformance, the 290X did have good preformance and all that, but it produces a lot less heat, which is a bigger problem, in such a small device that would cause throttleing and also wouldnt be too good for the display so close to

Sounds pretty nice, though I personally have no use for 5K - A bit OTT for my requirements.
In any case, I'll be sticking with my current iMac for some time.

Everyone keeps talking about gaming... on a mac...

Here I am wondering if we can get some workstation graphics cards in there...

Now with Maxwell doing so well on power usage and finally slapping AMD in OpenCL performance, I really hope Apple gets some Quadros in their systems.

1) Bullshit. A ton of people want 1440p.

2) the prices aren't going to come down that way. The defect density is so much higher in 4K panels that very few of them pass inspection, and there's no magical manufacturing process that will fix it. It's just a fact of life and engineering.

Now...does it use Intel Integrated Graphics?

It could use an updated version of Intels Iris Pro line. Linus showed off what Iris is capable of, such as light gaming and 4K playback. I personally think it will have something like Nvidias Optimus technology, maybe a 970M-980M and Iris for when the horsepower isn't needed.

it's obvious you can't game at 5K with any kind of current hardware...

I'll get hate for this but... i think gaming should be played at 1440p on this thing.

Creative work can be done at 5K without many issues.

This use case would be more realistic,...

I know the PCMasterRace culture absolutely insists on playing at screen's native resolution but it is simply impossible right now.

With the gpu they are going to put in there, you are probably only going to play at 1080p.

LOL. In that case I'd like my 1080p 60Hz+ back! :D

But seriously, I don't get those 4k 30Hz displays. I notice 50Hz compared to 60Hz, let alone 30!
