The USA wants to criminlize movie and music streaming

TopWargamer

Source: http://torrentfreak.com/obama-administration-wants-criminalize-movie-streaming-140725/

SOPA and PIPA are dead, but the Obama administration is still determined to make illicit movie and streaming a felony. The DOJ argues that change is needed to adequately prosecute unauthorized streaming services. In addition, the administration is requesting permanent funding to target foreign sites such as The Pirate Bay through "diplomatic and trade-based pressure."

Hm...this is technically a legal grey area. You would think "Oh ya, this is definitely illegal", but in reality, it's not as illegal as you think it is. What makes the practice of "watching free movies" illegal is if you're downloading or uploading the file, in which case, with streaming the movie/music, you're not doing either.

I dunno what to think about this in all honesty, but here's what I do know: Some very legitimate websites will be in trouble. Ever heard of Soundcloud or YouTube? They're not meant for illegal purposes, yet people upload copyrighted movies/music to these services ALL THE TIME. Google and Soundcloud can't really do anything about it. I mean, if they find it, they take it down, but another just pops up soon after. You can't just stop people from uploading it.

I use both of services, and I really don't want to see them affected by this law if it gets passed, because I'm sure that if they're affected, some legitimate videos/music could be caught in the crossfire...

permanent funding

Here the actual reason why they want this law.

The stone cannot know why the chisel cleaves it; the iron cannot know why the fire scorches it. When thy life is cleft and scorched, when death and despair leap at thee, beat not thy breast and curse thy evil fate, but thank the Builder for the trials that shape thee.

It's cachedownloading not storagedownloading. Dunno how it is in the U.S but in the EU this doesn't count as illegal download.

Here's a more serious reply and some thoughts:

-On this side you've got the ISPs fighting like fucking hell to just basically kill streaming services because they want either their cable tv services or some crappier form of very limited video on demand service to prevail. In the end by not allowing any service to grow the selection on all of them would be shit and they all would die (i.e. Nobody wants to pay 10 different services to watch all your different shows and movies each going to a different one). The government is directly complicit in this by appointing Tom fucking Wheeler as the head of the FCC basically saying "Yeah, fuck off VoD we already got our bribes from the ISPs"

-On the other side, you want to make the other alternative people have to actually watch the content they want to watch and nothing else, streaming and torrent sites, also illegal.

So what the fuck is the answer here, turn everybody into motherfucking Amish? Go backwards in technology and just use more expensive physical media even though it was easier to pirate that anyway? It boggles my mind that they can be this fucking stupid and not see how they're basically setting themselves up to collapse the entire entertainment industry, fucking Icarus ain't got shit on this people really.

Yeah, I was just pointing out that you're still downloading the data.

Do you happen to know where that information is? Thank you.

While I don't agree with this (I don't trust governments not to mess up and have legit content blocked too), it's basically what we've had in the UK for a few years, except it's not enshrined in law (companies sued isps and won so isps now have to block most torrent sites). There were quite a few... problems initially, with the wrong stuff being blocked etc, but now nobody really seems to have too many complaints about it (aside from the obvious). Whether it has reduced piracy... I kinda doubt it. Certainly, there are multiple ways to still access tpb.

Oh and stuff is blocked rather than a criminal offence.

I hope this is sarcasm, because streaming content you own and payed to yourself should be fine

To be fair the U.S. built what is now the internet... While I agree they need to stop and the politicians don't understand what they are doing, but the U.S. just stop officially owning it not that long ago..

WILL SOMEONE PLEASE KICK THESE FUCKERS OUT OF OFFICE ALREADY?

1. He doesn't do his job. (negligence)

2. He does things he isn't supposed to do. (criminal activity)

3. The things he does do, end up being shit. (incompetence)

That's 3 out of 3 strikes (although in my opinion only 1 of those is needed to remove someone from public office, and the suspicion of number 2 should be an automatic dismissal). As far as I'm concerned as an American Citizen, this man is no longer President, and nothing he passes is law, same goes for the senate.
