My last bill was about the same as the one before (under $100), but I know the next one's going to rise by about $100 because the folding setup is drawing 840 watts at 16c/kwh. That would be a wash if my place still had resistive electric heat, but I had an air source heat pump installed a few years ago and it draws a fraction of the power for the same effective output.

Also, fun fact: it's going to take more electricity to fold on those two servers for a month than it does to fully charge my car every day for 30 days. (But apparently "the grid can't handle EVs".🙄)

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

The issue with EV charging is that most people would get all of their charge at roughly the same time, and you're getting all of it within 4-6 hours, rather than spread with even load over the course of 24 hours like folding.  It isn't the kWh that is the problem with EVs for infrastructure, but the raw kW demand all at once.  There are certainly smart ways to handle this, but not everybody can wait, and not all circuits can handle more than a few EVs on them at once.  The adoption rate of EVs is such that except in rich "everybody gets an EV and commutes far" neighborhoods, it usually isn't going to be a problem for quite some time.

I think another part is user expectations. Too many people still think the only ways you can charge are either instantly at a supercharger or trickling off a wall socket for two days. EV charging doesn't have to look like a trip to the gas station!

Once I actually had someone ask me what I did for the 4 hours it takes my car to charge, thinking you have to stand there and watch it like a gas pump.

I've mostly been restricting myself to Pinball FX on Steam Deck OLED, the first time I've ever found a Pinball game on a handheld remotely comparable to a desktop (not just appearance but latency, frame rate and my general performance).  I even played a bit of The Talos Principle 2 on Steam Deck, quite painful after playing it on a 4090 as you have to drop the settings to "wait, that fence just appeared out of nowhere".

I also played some The Crew 2 over Shadow 70Mbit H265, its a night/day difference now they are using UK data centres so streaming latency is super low.  Its honestly the first time I've played a streaming service and found it usable.  Though I also tried The Crew Motorfest and it was a stutterfest, not sure if I couldn't find the right graphics settings or a streaming issue, possibly the former - maybe should have tried with F@H paused too. 😉

Stadia was utter garbage and would stutter, stall and drop connection constantly.  Gylt on Steam Deck was more pleasant than trying to play it back on Stadia.  Honestly what were they thinking, a game where you spent most of the time in the dark is the absolute worst thing you could do on streaming, even the best codecs crush blacks.  Plus the Steam version has HDR, makes the old Stadia version like trying to play on a Gameboy Color (which I despised, could never get the angle right to see the screen).

I was messing around with a 3D printer PT1000 for my DIY reflow oven, and I decided to put the thermistor on the exhaust of my laptop, it is currently sitting at 40.5-41 degrees Celsius... The ambient air is at around 19-20 degrees Celsius...

Now that I have moved the tip of the thermistor to be more aligned with the exhaust, the temperature has jumped to be about 57 degrees Celsius...
