Red Leicester, brie and some random stinky cheese that I can't remember the name. With a homemade red onion and mango relish

Even running a portable ac in my room all month and folding constantly my power usage was not that much more than normal. I am also on flat billing so my bill wont change for a few months. Also breached top 100 today, woohoo.

Still awesome! I love red Leicester and would be all over that relish. I've made a pepper and onion relish that everyone loves.

you know... I completely forgot that I was still folding during today... luckily I did not need my GPU or that could have been a bit questionable on performance. Now is the time I will have to wave my white flag as I now need to use my GPU to get work done 😞

To all of you with the big electric bills...go solar.

 

I built up credit in the spring and summer with $0 bills and exporting more than I used, and it has been getting used the last few months to heat the house via folding (and of course normal usage like holiday baking in the oven), instead of the oil furnace having to do all the work.  The bill covering last month's usage that came not too long ago was a "bit" higher, but still covered by the credits.

 

Solar isn't cheap, but it definitely pays back!

Can't I'm in social housing and when the council were rolling out solar for social housing tenants they gave the tenant the choice and the previous occupier of my house said no and now the gov scheme that paid for them is over so the council won't do it now

Fortunately I do have solar. Actually planned my usage around knowing that I would be putting a decent effort towards folding month. Been paying this months bill all year 😁.

Not much of a Gamer….. But I have thing about F@H that may be a little over the top.   See my builds here

Over the last few days, it has suddenly got a bit cold in the UK, and during that time I've discovered that my 4080 FE on a cold day (2-7C) gets more points than all my systems combined could manage on a mild day (12-17C).

 

This means that for most of the year my 4080FE is thermally limited and I can't really see anything I can do about it. The case has good airflow. The CPU is on an AIO with the radiator placed on an exhaust. The case and GPU are mostly free from dust. Any ideas?

I might be experienced, but I'm human and I do make mistakes. Expand for common PC building advice, a short bio and a list of my components and other tech. I edit my messages after sending them alot, please refresh before posting your reply. Please try to be clear and specific, you'll get a better answer. Please remember to mark solutions once you have the information you need.

 

Common build advice: 1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticably improve performance past 240mm.

PCs are one of my hobbies and I've built many PCs and performed upgrades on a few laptops (for myself, friends and family). It's not thermally limited, it's just GPUBoost doing it's thing, the colder it is the higher the boost clocks, this works all the way down to negative temps btw 

 

If you are over base clock then it is operating within spec

No... GPUBoost will push the clocks very high if very cold, so technically if that is thermally limited then anything over -40C/F that temp is the same no matter which scale you use, is thermally limited

The hyper-simplified way to think of GPU boost is to think of it as automatic overclocking since that's really all it is. The true base clock on my RTX 2080 (at least per spec) is 1515MHz, yet in-game I don't think I've ever seen it below 1900 unless I have my "holy fuck it is hot as BALLS in here" power limit turned on... Where it actually sits about where base clock is.

Indeed, based on other peoples testing base clock on the 2080 is slightly higher than its sweet-spot for efficiency which (from memory) is around 1440Mhz.

Yeah, I think the slightly better terminology to use would be (1) thermal throttling where temps actively decrease the base performance and (2) thermally constrained where temperatures merely limit the additional headroom available for boost clock. It's a bit pedantic but there is a difference.
