If CPU folding, this is easy.  in FAH Control, go set the thread count from -1 (automatic) to the number you wish to dedicate to F@H.  If you want to basically never think about it, do 1 less thread count than you have physical cores.  That way you'll always have a full non-hyperthreaded core for all your "now" tasks, and more hyperthreading to spin up for other things.  This will keep the system responsive while still folding, and generally without a ton of folding loss too.

Unfortunately I am GPU folding or I would do this. Do feel free to mail me some new epyc/threadrippers though and I will get right on that 🙂

I'd be more likely to fold long term if I had a dedicated PC for it or had a way to lock FAH to 50% gpu utilization.

Yeah, I've been looking around for some kind of way to define a scheduling solution. Would like to set it and forget it on idle folding, but rest easy knowing it'll get a break after a couple hours or something

AFAIK giving it a break every couple of hours is more likely to cause hardware failure as there will be more heating/cooling cycles.  Its one of the frustrating things about when WU downloads are slow, as I'd rather keep the cards under load at all times. Although technically every checkpoint is probably causing cooling cycles at the silicon level anyway and gaming is even more erratic, but I'd like to think the heat soak in the heatsink at least helps reduce this impact as it wont cool as quickly.

If all you want is to reduce power consumption, limit the power or clock rate of the card.  Of course if you want to actively use the card for 3D work during this time, its not very helpful.

The strange thing is, looking at the FAHCoreWrapper in the logs it appears the F@H cores DO have a way to limit GPU usage, its just not exposed to us.

Lars done g at home plug-in works for me.  You can schedule when to run F@H

Not much of a Gamer….. But I have thing about F@H that may be a little over the top.   See my builds here

Are you sure you didn't pass the participation threshold?

Quote

Minimum Participation Requirements For Prizes

20 Days with activity*, 500,000 Points & 40 WU

(*activity is defined as completing at least 1WU for the 24 hour period)

These must be met DURING the five weeks of the event. Points produced before the start date do not count!

You don't have to fold every day, just a minimum of 20 days over the span of the event.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

By my hand count you have more than 20 days and 500,000 points

Edit: And lars has your Work units month to date at 113, so you should be fine.

The  cards definitely decrease momentarily in clock speed but it's such a short period of time, the die temp never decreases any appreciable amount. I leave both cards on 24/7 and the temp drops a few degrees between WU. There's no way that amounts to anything in terms of heating/cooling cycles in the grand scheme of things 🙂

Software monitoring wont react fast enough to show the REAL die temp from such a short pause.  If it drops dramatically after a few seconds, you know its dropping quite a bit in a few ms too.

But I have to assume letting it drop to idle over several hours is a worse cooling cycle than a few ms as it gives the entire structure of the card time to change.

Folding month go BRRRRR

20231204_185247.jpg

Damn, not sure exactly what ours is but I suspect about 29.252p per kWh plus 62.804p per day.

So that's something like £760 (~$960) over the event, if my consumption had been consistent from start to finish!

Not sure if it will be more or less given I started off using less but them there's the electric cooker, microwave, coffee machine, electric shower, tax and possibly still the green levy?  Plus its going up again in January.

image.png.89c006c69140375ac5921995de6ccf8c.png

They're having a laugh, how does anyone use only 2700kWh in a year? Maybe if you're never at home and have solar.

I calculated our estimate based on 2160kWh in a month!
