From what I've gathered the biggest advantage to newer inverter units is they can run the compressor constantly at a lower power, so it maintains the temperature quietly rather than having to periodically come on at full power.

your right.

fridge units now dont need its own circuit in fuse box and dont needs tons of space now to vent hot air.

last fridge i got was 2003...i had to  bottom up educate myself on the topic

My understanding was fridges work the opposite, they cool the back down below freezing so that the ambient air stays cool longer and all condensation is collected at the back.  So it has to come on less often but still works on a full on, full off cycle.  Although maybe they are somewhat different outside Europe?

A lot has been happening in that space. The fridges i deal with have roughly 300W peak per unit. (And those are the ones used at events which get opened a lot)
That is way less than most of us consume with their space heater.
I'm at roughly 200kWh this event so far. By the End i will probably be around 250-300. That is less than the average fridge consumes in a year.

Yeah reading that auto-defrost section, fairly sure ours has no fan it just drains out the back of the fridge though I assume it has the heating element to evaporate once outside the unit as there were house fires caused by a dodgy brand/model a few years back.

The US I imagine its more common to have built-in units which would also explain the differences.

They still cycle on and off however the bigger single improvement is new fridges use variable speed inverter/compressor which also means they use thermostats with more precision with tighter set temperature points for on/off. Older fridges had problems with temperature overruns in both directions causing excessive warming or freezing which also caused condensation and which all leads to more rapid food expiration (or sometimes freezer burn on lettuce).

I was referring strictly to AC units with that.

ohh haha, sorry, was a little hard to read that backwards 

 

One thing I learnt recently was how important AC unit sizing was for room volume, I knew it was important sure but I didn't realize how bad it is if you try and use an undersize unit for the room, all the power efficiency goes away and you also over duty cycle it so fails way sooner. I also didn't realize how off I was on what I thought was enough for a room (without computers/servers). I'm far too used to matching electrical usage to unit size that I have zero idea for home usage.

Have you found a good reference for the calculations and explanations, or online calculator for this?  I've wanted to do a heat pump for primarily heating on average days (we have oil now that wouldn't go away, just be used far less), but also occasional cooling (mostly dehumidifying here) in the summer.  But companies quote wildly different sizes in differing numbers, and don't seem to have numbers to back up the why, despite them all saying engineering calculated what would be required.

You'd love my Strix 2080. Granted I did buy it used, but the fans have a light tick to them (mainly at lower RPMs) and lately when they hit 0dB mode sometimes there's one that just doesn't actually turn off... And it's not the same fan every time... So that's cool.

Points are valid after a little bit of a heart attack caused by google breaking google drive and Microsoft being stupid and blocking powershell from running in windows 11...but i got it working.  hope that google and @leadeater can work out their diffrences.
