Browser, version and OS: Chromium 100 (long story)

 

Steps to reproduce/what were you doing before it happened?

Place "x" between two sets of numbers.

 

Best example: 5800x3d

 

What happened?

Gets replaced with "×" (multiplication symbol).

 

What did you expect to happen?

Remain as "x".

To add to this, it does not happen when you capitalize the X...

Like 5x5 will change it but 5X5 wont.
And using the remove format button with the x selected changes nothing either.

(Using Firefox myself on Windows 10)

But it can also be circumvented by using capitalized X. (Which is what you want to use if you want it to mean a 'random' number. 😉)

I've been starting to notice this more frequently, mostly in posts about AMD's X3D CPU's, and I agree it is annoying. I feel like product names with an X in them are more commonly posted than people doing maths equations. Should be possible to disable it by disabling the calt feature of the font?

I have to agree with this. I like the aesthetic of Inter, but this sort of feature honestly seems like someone simply trying to be too clever and not thinking properly about the possible side-effects.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

Is the forum screwing around  and replacing =  and >  to =>  or is it some windows or firefox setting?

 

Saw that it also does replace for x when it thinks I'm writing some formula ex  Vout = 1x4 +5x30

 

When I copy and paste in a text document the x appears as 0x78 latin letter X  (it autoreplaced the x in the hexadecimal representation as well though it shouldn't have...

 

Not sure I'm a fan of these.

So i am doing an experiment injecting fonts into the LTT web page in attempt to find a better font.

The font doesn't need to be changed - just turning off the "contextual alternatives" feature would solve the problem.

 

It could probably be done with one line in the stylesheet somewhere: 

font-feature-settings: "calt" off;

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

That's very much subjective. You could always use a browser extension such as Stylus to apply a custom font, or indeed to apply the font-feature-settings rule mentioned above.

 

(For anyone who finds the auto-replacement thing particularly bothersome, that's the workaround).
