The famous Skidrow pirating group complains about its work being copy-pasted

KakaoDj

Kitguru article

You have probably come across Skidrow torrents in your endeavours, but did you know that someone has been copy-pasting their work? The irony is too strong in this one  :D A new rival has appeared: CODEX. It  has only been around since February  but somehow managed to beat the other top pirating groups to release but it wasn’t by playing fair or being smarter than the rest, apparently the group cheated its way to the top. Three days after the release of CODEX’s version of Trials Fusion, Skidrow released its own and revealed that the new group on the scene had in fact pirated its work.

“While looking inside their emulation code, we discovered something that was about to shock us completely, It was OUR work, OUR emulator.” an announcement from Skidrow said. “CODEX must be stupid to think that we don’t mark our code, but we had it clean on our screens, that CODEX are thieves of our Ubisoft emu. 99 percent of all their API calls in the code are identical with ours.”

Turns out that pirating groups do get mad at each other for stealing code. Skidrow can't really do anything about it aside from letting people know. But honestly, who cares?  (no offence Skidrow, pls no kill)

CODEX's answer (as posted by @Jogostarhttp://scenenotice.org/details.php?id=2224 - Contains burns

“In the past we used to protect our creations, but lately we have found out that even the most functional encryption tools have certain limits when it comes to preventing them from stealing CPU resources. Furthermore we have noticed that some people that use our releases, sometimes have issues with our work being notified as dangerous, when they run them on machines with certain antivirus, spam, spyware programs etc. Therefore we have decided to let our work, which is OUR work, be as clean and direct as you can get it.”

codex1.png

The above image acts as proof that CODEX stole Skidrow’s code, apparently Skidrow plants several stealth API calls in its code that identify and tag the groups work. So the image above shows that CODEX directly copy and pasted the pirating group’s work.

It sounded like they didn't want their work being copied because another group could use it a pack it full of malicious software. Either way, there is a difference between pirating someone's work and using it, and taking copying someone's work and then trying to pass it off as your own.

Just to play devil's advocate, yes Camul is right they probably don't want the blame for malicious hardware. This guys likely want an approach akin to open source licenses where they want full credit and full disclosure when their code it's used.

Plus even gangs protect their turf from rivals is not that surprising.

I wouldn't call it pirating but more plagiarism as no one is really making money off of the code. Credit should be given where credit is due and Codex didn't give credit.

Yes it is. Circumventing drm for personal use of legally acquired software is not piracy.

the issue is that they arnt being credited (plagiarism)

its totally different that being pirated skidrow doesn't mind using their cracks on different releases

I know, i used an harsh word "steal" - But since english is not my mother language at the time i couldn´t find other word for it... Well there is a lot of debate around that topic "piracy", but it can be good on one side, bad on the other, it's all about perspective and who benefits from it and who suffer the consequences from it...

the way I see it, if it weren't for this piracy, I. Wouldn't have got half the games in my library, for example, I didn't know if I wanted space engineers, but after I downloaded it "barrowed it" I confirmed that I like it, and I'm going to buy it on my next paycheck, but if I didn't "barrow" it I never would have experienced it and I would never buy it.

People that crack games arnt pirates persay since they are actually contributing something and in general had to buy something at some point. In general theyre doing it for the fun and challenge of cracking much of the time. Also there is a kind of code of conduct with groups of this sort which is why Skidrow is a bit PO'd.
