Well, people also forget that they can get locked out of lots of sites thanks to FB and similar social media platforms controlling their access to the site.

Hey um I will trade my entire life and soul for that laptop of yours 😉

According to the BBC it was a single person doing remote scheduled maintenance, something went wrong (obviously 🤣) and FB employees lost access to pretty much all internal tools. Since the update was done remotely that included the remote access tool they were using to do the update with meaning people actually had to get in cars and drive to a datacenter to get physical access. it doesn't say whether it was the update that went wrong or if the employee did something wrong.

Interesting that the copyright on their error page hasn't been updated in a year... Surprising for a company as big as Facebook to forget something like that

So, like did someone at Cloudflare or FB cause this?  Cuz, if you went over the log at cloudflare they had a 502 issue today.

No idea and TBH, I'm not sure the BBC are even correct. I've been having random connection failures all evening and for cloudflare to be affected this must be above anything FB staff can mess with.

Interestingly I'm on Instagram now and I would estimate that about 30% of the pictures simply won't load. Looks like not everything is back yet and I wonder if some servers have not been able to have been fixed yet

It takes time from server coming back online to data propagation plus if you were connected when it went down your local cache might be affected as well.

Almost seems like they got DDoSed.  THere was a lot of rerouting they had to do.

Give it some time as you probably have too many people trying to access it when they just got stuff back up.

Cloudflare have made a blog post that @igormp linked to a couple of pages back, no mention of a hack, just high load due to the timeouts and loads of retries from everyone's clients trying to access the FB sites again and again. So kind of a DDoS, but not from hackers...
