Thread for Linus Tech Tips Video Suggestions

CPotter

A suggestion for a more silly idea.

I like to game, my wife is always cold.

Try to build a water-cooled pc that connects to a heating blanket, or something like that.

Its gotta have some wife approval factor

mITX is awesome! I regret nothing (apart from when picking parts or have to do maintainance *cough*cough*)

Hello,

I have some suggestions. Next to gaming on pc I also like to listen to music on some "hifi" equipment. Navigating around all the snake oil is a real challange. Loved your review of the audio switch.

Staying within the audio side of things I want to build a Roon Server but it's really hard because I tend end up with a gaming pc in stead of a Roon Server if I start to look for parts. Could you do a video on building a good, quiet and affordable Roon server which can also be used as any other sort of server, multi-purpose server if possible.

And for labs, maybe check out the channel https://youtube.com/@AudioScienceReview and try to use a similar test for audio equipment so the test/reviews can be compared with his results creating a bigger and wider catalog/database for both channels to get rid of all the hifi snake oil.

Thank for all the great content you girls deliver.

Ran into what seemed like a fun video to me,  a content creator I watch sometimes who both does some moderate filming projects, as well as create minecraft content. (Mumbo Jumbo) recently bought a $7000 mac studio, because it was the only one he found that met the following requirements (which were listed in his video description)

"The system needed to:

1. Run Minecraft at a good enough level to record videos

2. Handle colour graded cinema camera files, and edit with them no dropped frames.

3. Have a large number of high speed I/O ports to deal with multiple large data transfers at once.

4. Be silent for recording audio in potentially small places (This is what ruled out most gaming laptops!)

5. Fit in a flight case, with the system, display, and flight case combination weighing under 20KG to be within the weight allowance for checked luggage on flights.

6. Be durable enough to be thrown on a plane, in the back of a van, in my backpack."

And I almost feel like there's a challenge there to find something that fits those, and maybe does it better for the price of $7000

The video in question where he 'tests' the studio in minecraft and lists the reasons and such is here:

Dear Linus Tech Tips Team,

I hope this email finds you well. I am writing to request that you consider reviewing a 144hz 1440p monitor that I believe would be of interest to your audience.

What sets this monitor apart is its low price point of only 180$. Despite its affordability, the monitor offers high-quality performance with its 1440p resolution and 144hz refresh rate.

I believe that this monitor offers excellent value for its price and would be a useful addition to your list of recommended products.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to seeing your review of this budget-friendly yet high-performance monitor.

We all know about Windows search recently. After watching the latest WAN show, I had the thought for a video idea:

Try to set up the same file structure and programs on Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10, and Windows 11 installs, and then try to search the same or similar terms to see how good the searches actually are.

There are fake hard drives on Amazon that you guys should do a video on. I tried to notify Amazon but they just ignore it with responses that make no sense. Maybe someone big like you guys could make a difference and avoid people with little knowledge from getting scammed. Also, these drives have fake reviews that has to do with the hard drive themselves.

I love how some of the fake reviews don't even mention the actual product at all lol. Some of the users for the 1-star reviews that I read are convinced that the drive is 16TB. Only one person that I read out of those knew that it was a totally fake product.

Yeah I was looking at the reviews there and it appears that some just believe the product is either too slow or they lose their data. Also, every one of them looks identical to each other and just has a different Chinese brand name, like most knock-offs.

I would to see stuff from my country's (Mexico) brands, like the brand "STEREN", our equivalent to Radioshack (by the way, Radioshack still exists in Mexico, it would be interesting for you to talk about the quite weird history behind the brand survival here)

This one.

I've recently started using my old iPad as a second screen, and I was surprised how well free software such as "spacedesk" (best free one I found, there are others) actually worked.
Might be good idea to compare an old tablet vs an ASUS mobile screen (and might get you a sponsorship out of it).

Of course the tablet side of things is not perfect, and there is a slight lag, but it is quite impressive and pretty useful as a second screen.

Categories to compare: Battery life, Lag, comfort, weight.
It seems that the battery life for external mobile screens is improving but it's still not perfect (Up to 3.5 hours of battery life).
Also, both can be connected using wifi so you can check which has better latency

There's a lot to compare, and a lot of people have old tablets with no real use today.

How to maintain your computer

So I call bs when people say "this requires zero maintenance" because it means it's disposable.

So, what do you do to maintain your computer?

What oil do you apply where?

How often do you replace your thermal paste?

What else am I not doing that I should be doing?

For April Fool's, build a "high end" system that is using old parts that have the same model numbers as modern components. For example, CPU is a 7900X, but it's Intel Skylake, not AMD Zen4. GPU is a 6800XT, but it's NVidia GeForce, not AMD Radeon.

WINDOWS AUDIO MANAGER

Alright seriously I've said this like a hundred times on videos and in threads before but once again on WAN show you had problems with Windows' audio manager @12:05.  If you download EarTrumpet you won't have the problem of losing audio over HDMI when the screen turns off anymore.  Please do a video on how Windows audio manager is garbage and EarTrumpet solves all its problems.  I've been using it for something like 8 years because Windows audio handling is trash and someone needs to bring it to light so Microsoft actually does something about it.  Before I could understand you would have said Microsoft doesn't care but your recent Windows Modern Standby has proven that Microsoft does sometimes listen when you complain loud enough.  Me trying to complain on the windows support forum has never gotten anywhere.

I was a projectionist for 15 years and dealing with Windows' inability to recognize and handle HDMI audio output properly was a MAJOR problem for me.  Especially during live events.  I always recommended that people downloaded EarTrumpet to force it to act correctly.  We would do awards shows and indy film screenings on a weekly basis.  So granted it only seems to be an issue that you see when you are plugging and unplugging HDMI from your PC/laptop constantly but it is an issue and even more so for those of us, like you, that use Windows professionally to stream/play audio regularly.  It's almost like Windows just can't keep track of many HDMI audio devices without just flat out failing.  I would usually recommend using the headphone jack instead of HDMI if possible but often that wasn't an option because we needed more than 2 channel and HDMI is usually the only way to get 5.1 audio out of a laptop.  This is only getting worse with modern laptops not having enough ports.  It may seem like a super niche edge case but if you think about it how many people use their laptops for work presentations?  A LOT!  Those are especially the cases when you CANNOT have failures without looking very unprofessional and possibly losing an account or client over.

And maybe also complain about windows search while you're at it.  Though I highly suspect that's more of an "user error" thing cause Microsoft is probably trying to FORCE you to use their Bing web search and thinks that's the "better" way for search to work.  I also wish you'd make a bigger deal about forced updates because I have an old laptop with a hybrid video card and modern Windows drivers fail to work forcing me to track down the 9 year old drivers every time it "updates" my video drivers.  I know it's an edge case but I feel that the poorer you are the more you run into updates that break your computer even though you can't afford to buy a newer laptop.  Preventing updates needs to be an option.

The suggestion for a video I have is an old one I had a decade ago… Why video resolutions are standardized and in a pinch, why you might Not want a standard resolution.  Aka fun with transcoders as a workaround…

I had an old laoptop and (at the time) a relatively new 720p TV.

I wanted to use my TV for watching videos, but couldn’t due to my laptop having a SVGA output port, but no HDMI or display port.

As a result, I ended up using a VGA to component cable encoder and using the software Power Strip was able to get it to output to my TV, but only by setting my video resolution to really oddball settings (weird resolutions like 1000 x 666 or something similar).

It took a lot of playing around to get it to work back then, but it was a viable option given how much a better solution would have cost at the time.  And it was fairly entertaining to figure it out.

My beautiful vision…Have an Air cooled PC and wanna get those sUb-AmBiEnT tEmPz bRuHH?  Got a stock cooler on that CPU and can’t beat your friends benchmarks or get that siiiiiick OC you want?Just take your PC and hide it in the walk in freezer at work!

The sub-zero game room! Just start working for a restaurant and either convince your manager to allow you to game in there, or just hide your PC behind a wall of boxes and create the ultimate stealth game room!

Yeah, I know you guys did it in a fridge before..but that’s not a walk in freezer, a mineral oil cooled PC or server rack inside a massive chest freezer with a high capacity, different coolers, an entire PC in a high airflow case, a water cooled PC?  Plenty of options, I just think the cooling vids are always a ton of fun and the idea was done no justice with a single video 7 years ago. the vid in a fridge is just kind of lame, because you never really attempted to make it work and took it too seriously.   A little less 2015 Linus, a little more car radiator cooling Linus and Alex.  Make it work!  Make my dreams come true!

maybe you can develop a special PC freezer that actually works and you can just put in your PC, or that has hardware mounts in it?  Estimated release: 2032

How about an updated folding at home video?  The LTT community is rated top 4 which is really cool.  With the GPU crypto crash perhaps there may be ex-miners with hardware that could be repurposed under new projects. 😀

During the GPU shortage I sold my secondary lab GPUs but recently picked up a second hand GTX 1660 for $80 US for my my lab setups.  This gives me the impression good deals are to be had.  I'm currently playing with an Unraid virtual machine GPU passthrough and doing folding at home on a VM.  Consider it a fun way to both learn and donate.
