Old News: 2000 years old loaf of bread found in the ruins of Pompeii

Summary

A 2000 years old bread was found in the ruins of Pompeii,

Preserved thanks to the tragic eruption of mount Vesuvius.

Quotes

Quote

The ruins of Pompeii were first “discovered” in the late 16th century, even though the existence of an ancient city,

hidden for centuries somewhere below the ground, was well known.

Loaves of bread were found in an oven inside the ruins of a bakery, preserved in charcoal, covered in ancient ash, with their texture and shape looking like they just came out of the oven.

Each is marked with the baker’s stamp, which was used as a guarantee of quality and a mark of the bakery in which the loaf was made.

The violent eruption of Mount Vesuvius is considered to be one of the greatest natural catastrophes of the ancient world, when several cities in the Bay of Naples were covered in ash and rock, and left just as they stood on that fateful day in 79 AD.

My thoughts

It's amazing that we found a 2000 years old bread that was never touched, and that it survived for more than 2000 years.

The tragic eruption of mount Vesuvius at least helped with preserving Pompeii and it's wonders,i will be glad to visit it one day.

It reminds me that the Romans ate well,a common Roman breakfast consisted of bread with cheese and olives,or honey - Delicious!,the Romans had good taste!.

If you bake one it's actually really good,

But the original is just bread and volcano ash 😄

that bread looks pretty bad, I can go to the local bakery by me and get better bread.

It's filled with volcano ash,due to a volcanic eruption.

You could bake one if you want,it has a white-brown color.

That's actually a pretty neat little detail; they don't do that anymore.

The black death was rampant in medieval times, not in the times of the Romans.

Nah, I'll warm it up still.

Someone once looked at baked bread and said "what if I warmed it up again!" And made toast.

Yeah,it's really cool, bakers that are proud in their work making sure that anyone who looks at their bread will know it,and know who made it in case they want to buy one.

Would be nice to see a comeback of this trend.

Prehistoric bread. Lasts over 2 millennia and is still recognizable.

Modern day bread. Can't go two weeks in my cupboard without growing four different colors of mold...

What is their secret? 🤔

We've all seen this timelapses of McDonalds burgers lasting for months looking the same, so I'm sure the research into how preserving 'food' starts there.

What misconception??? No-one said anything about the black death. They said a plague, of which there have been others throughout history, including during the time of the Roman Empire.
