Early this morning, Apple launched their "professional" set of over-ear headphones - AirPods Max, which features "high-fidelity audio, Adaptive EQ, Active Noise Cancellation, and spatial audio". It is available in space gray, silver, sky blue, green, and pink, and will start shipping Tuesday, December 15 for $549 USD.

My thoughts

Headphones, woo! I mean I will have to wait for DankPods to review them, but damn $549 is expensive. They better sound like heaven for that price.

 

The worst part for me is that for $549, you don't get some cool touch sensor or pressure sensor technology. You don't get some wizardry "wave your hand in front of the cup" thing to change the audio. You get a Fucking. Digital. Crown. Excuse me? I'm sure it will work great, but at $549 you could've given me literally brain sensing technology to know when I wanted to change my audio. Why not two taps on a cup to turn on/off playback? This alone wouldn't want to make me buy it if I had the money to burn. This seems disgusting...

 

It would've been better to literally have all the controls on the phone itself IMO. This just seems like the Apple version of shitting on an expensive wedding cake.

 

And I don't think it folds, so good luck putting this in your bag...

 

Also, no headphone jack, but I don't think you can listen to music through the lightning cable (WHY LIGHTNING?! Apple is literally going to make a port less iPhone next year. Lightning will be phased out by 2023 why are you still making accessories with it?!), which means that these "professional" headphones can't be used for "professional" tasks because it's Bluetooth. Hopefully there's next to no latency, or else they're only good for media consumption

 

And to top it off, no USB-C charging brick, despite having a USB-C to Lightning cable. Now in Apple's defense, no AirPods model before this came with a charging brick, but still at $549 you better start giving me handouts to appease me.

 

The thing is that these will probably sound amazing. But is amazing sound + integration with iOS worth it for the vast majority of non-audiophiles (like yours truly) who have never spent more than $300 on headphones/airpods? If they released a model for $350 (that was rumored) that was made of plastic, it would be easy to recommend. But $549 is going to be out of reach for a lot of people, especially when AirPods Pro were just on sale for $169.

But i'm still shocked. 550 is way to high compared to their other 2 airpods lol

I'll say two things. They are way too expensive and airpods are so popular because they AREN'T over the ear headphones. I expect these to sell well but don't expect anything close to airpods

When you get up that high you forcefully get compared to some high-end headphones, like Sennheiser's and AKG's (from before Samsung bought them). They better sound good or they're going to flop like the HomePod.

 

I get that noise cancelling adds a lot to the price, but why not make two versions? AirPods Max and AirPods Pro Max?

 

At least AirPods 1st-Gen were in a price range where a lot of people could afford it for a Christmas present. This is just ridiculous…

I thought they would be aiming to compete with the likes of Bose 700 and Sony XM3 ANC headphones, but both are those are in the $350 range. Maybe they're trying to position them as ANC headphones but that don't have as many acoustic issues? Or just high end ANC headphones? (since the competitors are largely just plastic)

 

The pricing is kind of similar to Master & Dynamic MW65 ($499), which have ANC (not great), but high build quality and pretty decent sound. 

 

 Until there's a review, gonna be weird to figure out the angle.

AirPods makes SO MUCH MORE MONEY than Beats. They're trying to get rid of Beats and assimilate everything into one brand.

 

For instance, in 2019, the revenue from AirPods alone was more than the revenue from Adobe, Nvidia, AMD, or Spotify. *Just AirPods alone*. Completely wrong. AirPods only made $12BN in revenue in 2019, some website evaluated a theoretical AirPods business at $60BN. It's certainly much more than Beats, however. I couldn't find a concrete revenue estimation/value for beats in 2019 but I would be shocked if it crossed $6BN

 

Why have two brands -- one known for luxury and the other known for bass heavy crap headphones, when you can just have one brand that will make you all the money.

There were rumblings that Apple would make two variants of these headphones, one made of plastic for around ~$350, and one made of metal/leather for around this price.

 

I guess the plastic one got axed or isn't ready for production yet.

wow, my dad just got a airpods pro with the 12 pro max as a bungle with 5g, hell be happy to hear that, anyways, he still didn't change to the 12 pro max, and I feel like the controls on the touch sensors are not working, he is now on an x

You will be charged more than the cost of the phone,it's easy to mask it with smaller monthly payments.

All Sennheisers I've tried so far in my life have way to much bass. 

 

Speakers and headphones (all types) are best when they have a completely flat sound profile.

yes monthly payment, internet plan with free phone, and accesories and others, not fully paid, but should he change to the 12 pro max to get full functionality, controls seem different to the one in unbox therapy's video

It depends on what type you buy,

All of their earbuds and in-ears have too much bass,but their over the hear headsets is a different story.

You have their professional DJ and studio headphones which have neutral sound (buy the HD 201/HD206 if you are on the budget),then you have the gaming ones,and the music ones,the best ones are obviously their professional DJ and studio headphones.
