LTT Official Folding Month 2020!!!

Go to solution Solved by GOTSpectrum,

Luckily when I said it was almost done, I really meant it.

For the last time in 2020, ladles and gentlespoons, here a blog post.

And with that said, it's a wrap! Thank you for everyone getting involved, if you'd like to continue talking about folding why not head over to The Folding Community Board

How do you get the client to work on Fedora 32?

The Linux Howto in my sig is specific to Ubuntu but the process is the same.

  • Install latest nvidia or amd closed-source drivers
  • install opencl dev packakes
  • install folding at home

The main issue under *nix is getting the Advanced Control tool working locally on the system as it is built using Python2 which is deprecated. I just use my Windows daily driver to remote control my Linux systems which, for the most, part are all headless.

I'm sure there are tutorials on the Official Support Forums for Fedora.

Well I had been hoping to get a 3070 on the 15th to fold with, but that looks like it's not going to be possible now that its release has been delayed to the 29th. Hopefully I can get one then and it will be able to help out in the latter half of the event. In the mean time I'll keep on going with my 1060 and 1080. I must say I have certainly got a lot of mileage out of the 1060 since I got it on launch day back in 2016 and have been folding mostly since then.

How many systems or cards are people throwing at it this time?

System 1

3950x + 5700xt (it's a place holder)

System 2
3900x + 2080

My 3950x system is water cooled and undervolted with a drop on power limit for the gpu to keep fan noise down since it sits beside my bed currently. Probably ramp things up once things get started but I'm finding my folding rate isn't affected that much by the lower gpu power limit. My 2080 is a blower so it gets a slight cut to power limit as well, I don't feel like killing the card until I can buy a replacement. I thought my 28 cpu cores and 2 gpu was a decent contribution, but from what I see it pales in comparison to the more dedicated folders. Guess I need to buy moar gpu

I've used it on Ubuntu, not Fedora, but I've had good success with getting the control working with this code, which addresses the python2 dependency:

Apply standard "use at your own risk" template.

See the link in my post - It's a fix that involves changing one line of code

I downloaded and installed the RPM packages they have.  IIRC, the instructions were to run fahcontrol to enter some credentials before you can do anything.  I should have such credentials from over 20 years or so ago when it was called seti@home or something, if I can find them.  But fahcontrol didn't run because they're using outdated python.

I'm used to that software installed from RPM packages just works, so they obviously have done a very poor job with it and haven't even tested it.  Their website also sucks and there's no documentation.  I tried to send them an email and got no answer.

If they want people to do computing for them, they need to work on all that a lot.  Because it might help myself if they find something useful against Corona, I'm still willing to give it a try.  This is what I got with the RPM packages when I tried:

seti@home is different from folding@home, and seti closed down not that long ago.

You've already answered the real problem, F@H is one of millions of projects still using python2 instead of python3, which is now the default install in most linux distros, and python3 is NOT backwards compatible with python2.  This is a very common problem with software, even on non-linux platforms, since updating your code to use python3 instead of python2 isn't always straightforward and simple.

However, it is as simple as having a good python2 install to make things work.

As for anything else, there are of course drivers and things like opencl/cuda support that you'll also want, but you should've already had those in your install if you were using a GPU card anyway.

I completely agree with the sentiment though, that linux installs suck compared to other OSs, despite how simple and easy to use linux folks like to say they are.

Unfortunately the last client was built back in 2015/16 and due to their need for support across the three major desktop platforms it used the then-current python libraries.

There was a project under-way to move the client to open-source and the current version of Python but that stalled when COVID hit but they are now starting it again.

The python support is only for the visualizer and Advanced Control applets and is not required for folding itself if you have another system you can control it from.

All you _SHOULD_ have to do iis install the python2 packages and edit the first line in FAHControl.

Solved: FAHControl doesn't work on Fedora 31: needs Python2

Postby Markus_Laker » Mon Jan 06, 2020 12:45 am

If run from a desktop environment, FAHControl silently fails during startup. If run from a bash prompt, it fails more informatively:

[msl@localhost ~]$ FAHControl
 File "/usr/bin/FAHControl", line 57
 if sock.recv(1024).strip() == 'OK': print 'Ok'
                                            ^
 SyntaxError: invalid syntax
[msl@localhost ~]$
Python 2 and Python 3 are incompatible in several ways that are provoked by this script. Python 3 is the default Python in Fedora 31 -- that's what you get if you run /usr/bin/python. However, Python 2 is available as /usr/bin/python2 for backwards-compatibility. If I change the first line from

#!/usr/bin/python
to

#!/usr/bin/python2
then FAHControl starts normally.

I installed the packages again and it's just not working.  When installing the FAHClient, apparently it's supposed to be started automatically, but it just says "Starting fahclient ... FAIL".  If I start it manually, it says "20:16:08:ERROR:Exception: Failed to open 'log.txt': Failed to open 'log.txt': Permission denied: Permission denied".

This software is ancient, it's even still using an init.d script.  Maybe I should just give up on it.

If it uses my graphics card, then the power consumption might be too high to have it running for useful amounts of time anyway.

Likely you've run into the "feature" where the executable needs to made a member of the video group.

Add the unprivileged fahclient user to the video group:

sudo usermod -a -G video fahclient

Replace the systemd service file so that fahclient loads properly:

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/FAHClient.service

Description=Folding@Home Client
After=network.target

Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/FAHClient /etc/fahclient/config.xml --pid-file=/var/run/fahclient/fahclient.pid --daemon

I realize that most regular participants already know about power limiting your GPUs to increase efficiency and reduce noise but I figured with the folding month about to start it wouldn't hurt to have a post to link to:

How many systems or cards are people throwing at it this time?

I'll have some multi-cpu xeon servers running spare threads, an i5 laptop or two on occasion, and a Ryzen 2400G server cpu folding a couple threads (I did a brief stint using the built in GPU to fold under windows before making it linux based, but never got that working on linux with the APU graphics, and purposely severely down clock graphics to a few hundred mhz to save power under normal headless conditions anyway).  Once in a great while my MacBook Pro will also join in on that, but it is the daily everything machine.

Thanks!  Adding the video group lets fahclient run.  I've modified the service file:

Quote

[Unit]
Description=Folding@Home Client
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/FAHClient /etc/fahclient/config.xml --pid-file=/tmp/fahclient.pid --daemon
PIDFile=/tmp/fahclient.pid
User=fahclient
RuntimeDirectory=fahclient
WorkingDirectory=~
PrivateTmp=true

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

/var/run is considered a "legacy directory", and /run is giving permission errors.

Fahcontrol still doesn't work after changing to phtyon2:

Quote

FAHControl
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/FAHControl", line 25, in <module>
    from fah import FAHControl, load_fahcontrol_db
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fah/__init__.py", line 29, in <module>
    from SlotConfig import *
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fah/SlotConfig.py", line 26, in <module>
    from fah.util import parse_bool
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fah/fah/__init__.py", line 24, in <module>
    import db
ImportError: No module named db

Any idea what's with this db module?  I thought fahcontrol is needed to add some credentials?  I'd rather not fold anonoymously.

The fahclient seems to use 3 CPU cores.  So far, it doesn't seem to use the GPU.  Nvidia-settings says the GPU is idle.  What's it doing, and what is it supposed to do?
