The fahclient seems to use 3 CPU cores.  So far, it doesn't seem to use the GPU.  Nvidia-settings says the GPU is idle.  What's it doing, and what is it supposed to do?

 

No idea what now is preventing the FAHControl from running on that client. I’ve stuck with Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS as it just works out of the box and as I mentioned I run all my systems headless and use HFM.net and the FAHClient on a remote Windoze machine to monitor and control the clients (see the remote access link in my sig). Posting your output over at The official support site: foldingform.org Is likely your best bet as I know there are several folks there running Fedora, Arch and evening SuSE.

 

You can control it manually by stopping the FAHClient service and editing /etc/FAHClient.xml then restarting the service.

 

You can also control it locally using

telnet localhost 36330

in fact all the advanced control is a GUI wrapper that sends commands to that port.

 

By default it will just setup the cpu to fold. To get the GPU to fold you have to configure a slot to get the GPU going.

Cool, I didn't know they have a forum.  I tried to get a passkey and it's not arriving.

 

I added a slot and it says

Whatever.  It's not working and there is no documentation, and I'm done with it.  They can let me know when they fixed their software and I might try again if they ever manage to send me the passkey.  Obviously they don't want any support.

There is actually a whole lot of information out there but it’s mostly scattered in forum posts. There used to be a wiki but it wasn’t kept up to date and most of the information in it is not relevant these days.

Install the opencl-dev package. You might have to set the opencl index to zero rather than -1.
 

This is quite common and reflects the age of the package and the need for it to be updated. There’s only one developer working on this part-time and the support form and the rest is run by volunteers.

 

If you haven’t received a Passkey yet check your spam folder. At the start of COVID there were so much traffic the infrastructure got overloaded and the volume of Passkey emails got their server on blacklists as a possible spam source.

 

If your frustrated with F@H you could give BOINC a try. Rosetta and World Community Grid have COVID jobs but they’re CPU only.

 

Again, there’s a bit of a learning curve with BOINC as well but like F@H once you get it figured out you can just set how much you want to contribute and forget it.

 

I spun up two additional Ubuntu systems Using some old hardware in a couple of hours each over the last couple of days to bring a few more GPUs on line for the competition here.

 

Its not too bad once you get the kinks worked out to get it going again or on a new system but unfortunately I don’t have any experience getting it working on Fedora.

Everyone should remember that just because 30 series put up big numbers does not mean they will have the best PPD/KwH figures. Before the 2060 super were the sweet spot if you were looking for the most efficient card.

i want to know the fold per watt that is why i went with the 2060 and the 2060ko was fold per watt & fold per $ and i want to see the New 6000 Series Graphics as well...but also gaming is important too...

And I am in an even weirder position where I have limited space (work desk cant have a mega tower, home desk I dont want more than one tower) and the cost of the electricity isnt a direct concern (my main folder is at our office, which I do indirectly pay part of the bill for, but its just one small part of the office so the change it makes isnt a huge deal).  So it benefits me to have the largest single GPU possible, regardless of efficiency.  Also I game when I am stuck on 24 hour call so it also needs to be a beast

It's not only that.  The problem is that electricity is ridiculously expensive, so even if I could get it to work, I won't let it run.

 

Such software was great before CPUs started to save power when idle.  Once they did, I stopped running seti@home.

 

I've seen suggested to change the "opencl index" and I have no idea what it means and how to do that.

I was aware that you can use multiple GPUs in one system and have them all fold, but I was under the impression that you could only map one WU to one GPU, not have multiple cards work on an individual WU.  Is that correct?
