Most glorious way you've crashed your computer?

Turns out, it's far easier than I thought to completely overload a reasonably powerful computer with six cores and 16GB of RAM. All I had to do was:

  • Two layers of 4K video mixing in Resolume
  • Five instances of GPU texture sharing (Spout)
  • One Art-Net stream
  • Three simultaneous Unity render outputs (building a VR app)
  • Bring the whole thing into OBS
  • Send out two network video streams (NDI rocks)
  • Open one YouTube video in Chrome

easy peasy

this is sarcasm

All I had to do is disable network bridge that I use to share internet via USB to ethernet adapter  to brothers laptop, couldn't enable it back without restarting the machine...

Computer kept saying some other instance of network setup was already running or something like that.

After I manually closed all processes related to network xD I obviously lost internet on main machine too

By installing Windows 10.

No jokes, the graphics driver for my netbook would straight up crash on Windows 10 upon boot.

Jokes on you, this profile picture is older than Windows 10, so this Atari ST is actually running Windows 8.1 xD

...which, on my netbook, would crash upon opening any Metro app. Luckily, this was only possible when connected to an external monitor, because the display was only 600 pixels tall (768 was the minimum requirement for running Metro apps), so it wasn't too big of an issue

One time I was playing X-Plane 10 on an HP Probook x360 11 G2 EE (school laptop) and I got a BSOD minutes into flying. I would consider it potato quality as I got around, what, 15 FPS if I was lucky.

Crashed my desktop before while playing Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 in PCSX2.

Basically, if you get pulled over by the cops, the game has a really weird issue when playing in a certain graphical rendering mode (DX11 hardware for example) at non-native resolutions. It plays at like a frame a minute and can legitimately lock up your computer if you’re not careful.

Plugging in a flash drive. There's a grounding issue (?) with my motherboard and the front usb ports. Roughly a 50/50 chance the computer will freeze or work normally. I test those odds everytime.

Final Fantasy XII has a similar issue when using certain quickenings that drops the frame rate to several seconds a frame. If you let it play through, it will work again. Given the particle effects, could it be a fill or memory bandwidth issue?

Maybe? Considering that the issue isn't present in software rendering, it could very well be an effect that just doesn't work properly in hardware rendering on PCSX2.

The PS2 is also a very different beast to anything remotely resembling modern.

For the time, the PS2 has a very high fill rate and memory bandwidth (~50 GB/sec to the VRAM) for a resolution of sub 640x480. As a result, the system easily handled tons of overdraw.

Modern GPUs focus on programmability over sheer draw speed, so a PS2 game probably doesn’t play well to the strengths of modern hardware to begin with. Start running the resolution higher, and fill rate + bandwidth requirements go up accordingly.

It’s important to note that the PS2 does not have pixel shaders, so full screen filters are typically handled via multiple textured translucent layers. Cheap to run on the PS2, horribly expensive if you tried it on today’s hardware at high resolution. Even if a given effect isn’t broken in emulation, I can’t imagine the load being easy on hardware.

I did this too, the computer was asleep and I thought it was shut down, thankfully there were no lasting ill-effects.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

Inserted a broken peripheral into an older laptop where the USB ports didn't have fuses yet. I heard a pop and the system shut off.

It worked again once I removed the peripheral.

A magazine of 9mm Makarov hollowpoints to an Acer laptop that otherwise just.wouldn't.die. It was a terrible POS otherwise, slow, crappy, but wouldn't ever die completely. So I helped it along.

BSOD'd once installing Windows long ago, it turned out there was a fingerprint on the disk and it did something very wrong. Back in the day I had a defrag going on a hard drive and had a brown-out, it corrupted a whole lot of system files but luckily I was able to get my documents off.

My Current Setup:

AMD Ryzen 5900X

Kingston HyperX Fury 3200mhz 2x16GB

MSI B450 Gaming Plus

Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

EVGA RTX 3060 Ti XC

Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

WD 5400RPM 2TB

EVGA G3 750W

Corsair Carbide 300R

I remember my PC used to absolutely hate Ark Survival Evolved it would constantly crash out of nowhere for the most stupid reasons, it runs fine now they must have had an update that fixed it but back then it was impossible to play and most times my PC would just completely give up and shut down.

Computer would hard reset due to an incompatible driver. That took me like, 3 damn months to figure out - not only what was causing it, but how to actually fix it. 😕

Putting a floppy in a drive with a hidden short in it's power cable. Long story short - FDD power connector on fire. Drive survived, PSU didn't.
